Top points were awarded for its aesthetics, and we liked the fact that the base is the same width as the bell, which is always a sound design choice in a quality wine glass. We also appreciated the way the glass accentuated the olfactory notes of white wine in particular, with its more narrow design probably more suited for pretty whites than for robust reds. While this isn't a cheap glass, it will surely be a hit with anyone whose wine habits skew toward the white side of things. Red wines can be unyielding, their flavors and aromas wrapped up in layers of tannins that take hours to unfold, but a well-designed wine glass can be extremely helpful in speeding along that process. We found that the unique design of the Josephine No. 3 allows the wine to be swirled vigorously with very little risk of any splashing out. Additionally, the wide surface area aids in aeration, and the flowing tapered design effectively conducts all those newly-released aromatics up to the nose. KnowWines is a team of two. My husband loves the Zalto. However, I’m partial to Gabriel Glas Gold.When swirling the glass, I feel that the Zalto is a little clunkier, while the Gabriel Glas is more “fluid.” For wine lovers who appreciate a good value, the Angle glasses from Williams Sonoma offer a great deal of quality at a very affordable price. Tall and well-proportioned with a recognizable Bordeaux-style look, the glass had a classic yet modern appearance, and we found it to be reminiscent of the much more expensive Josephine glasses. It performed equally well for both red and white wines, highlighting the aromatics well and providing plenty of room for swirling with its large capacity. With its timeless design and wide bowl, the glass is ideal for white or red wines (and sparkling too, for that matter), as the aesthetic presentation of the wine is attractive and the aromatics are rich and pleasing. We found that delicate aromatics opened up a bit more after swirling, allowing us to experience more of the wine characteristics. Zalto’s Denk’Art Universal Glass is undeniably among the best of the best, and cult-favorite Turkish glassware brand NUDE also has some very appealing and versatile options for reds and whites at a fraction of Zalto’s price tag, though their selection can be a bit overwhelming at times. While these brands have both been on my wish list for quite some time, I decided to dig a bit deeper to see what else was out there.

Durability is excellent because my wife’s hobbies include breaking Riedel glasses. Gabriel Glas This one glass will easily supersede your Riesling glass, Champagne, Pinot, Shiraz, Sauvignon Blanc without you having to have 4-8 glasses in each style. Opening Diameter: This trait really affects the aroma presence of wine. In the video, I had some quips about smaller diameter openings for red wines because of how much it shoveled the aromas into my nose (the burn!). 2.25 inches was tight for reds but ideal for whites. 2.5 inches was about right (both Zalto and Gabriel-Glass were around 2.5). Then, at the top-end of wine glasses, there are many options. We loved Zalto and Gabriel-Glas, as we mentioned above, but could come up with reasons to love each of the glasses we tested. It has been a long time between shared drinks for a lot of us. I have not hosted a dinner since October 2019. I am keen to get out and share great food and great company. How about you? Multi-Piece: Most glasses are made with multiple pieces. The high-end models are not, which is why they are so much more durable despite how fragile they look and feel. Still, there’s nothing wrong with being multi-piece, make sure they get the seams off. (You can feel the seam on the stem.) Gabriel-Glas may not roll off the tongue the way Riedel does, but if you’re not familiar with this brand, you’re missing out on some exception glassware. The brand is the brainchild of Rene Gabriel, a former wine critic who developed this glass to be a uniform — yet ideal — glass for tastings. He spent two years developing the glass, which (unlike the Riedel approach) is designed to be ideal for any type of wine and is not varietal specific. Depending on your reasons for buying glassware, you need to think about the size of the bowl. If you’re more of a red wine drinker, you’ll need a bigger bowl to properly swirl and aerate the wine and a smaller bowl for white wines. The actual height of the glass is something to think about, too. How does the glass feel in your hand? You don’t want it to feel too small or too big. Weight Bowl Clarity: One thing I noticed on all the hand blown models was an amazing clarity. Many machine-made glasses will have slight ribbing on the bowl, and it distorts light. It doesn’t affect the taste, but it’s one of those things you notice when looking at quality.
