Battery powered tea kettles must have an indicator that shows how much battery life is left in them or when they are charging. Battery powered kettles must also have a mechanism that turns them off once the desired temperature has been reached. The folding handle of the iBasingo is actually semicircular and attached over the top filling aperture of the kettle. I personally prefer the side handle of the MSR as I found it easier to pour, but this is personal preference. The Primus Litech Camping Kettle is our current ‘go-to’ anodized aluminium stove-top favourite. Primus should need no introduction, and their kettle is the definition of a clean design. The main problem with battery powered kettles is that they just use too much energy to boil water and a real battery powered kettle simply doesn’t exist. Portable kettles can be quite bulky and difficult to carry around as well. If you want to heat a single cup of water (230ml) from room temperature (25 °C) to boiling (100 °C), you will need around 20 Wh of power. You had to pour from a bulky container attached to the wall by a short cord. You could not step away from the counter, so everything you needed had to be sitting right there. The kettle spout includes a whistling cover and it gives a mighty shriek when the water is boiling. There’s no ignoring this bad boy! We did find that the cover took a bit of effort to open using the thumb lever system, and this did get quite hot to the touch. Not ideal, and we must say that the button release of the Pykal is better in this regard.
