Really, really enjoyed this. This is one of the most intelligent and interesting books about the 21st-century that I’ve encountered. I enjoy it when I'm wrong-footed as to what a novel is really about until I get into the heart of its story. “Asylum Road” is very cleverly structured in how it carefully reveals information in different sections as it carries you through the emotional journey of its protagonist Anya, a 20-something PhD student. The novel's opening line is “Sometimes it felt like the murders kept us together.” But rather than describing a couple who commit murders it goes on to detail their journey from London to France while listening to true crime dramas along the way. Anya is tense thinking her ecologically-minded boyfriend Luke might break up with her on this trip but it turns out he proposes to her with a diamond ring. It feels like this will become a typical modern-day story of the highs and lows of romance yet the ominous tone of that opening line remains and is carried through the story as we gradually learn that Anya was a survivor of the Seige of Sarajevo which occurred when she was a girl. But this isn't a historical account of the Bosnian War. Instead it shows the day to day experience of someone living with a deep trauma that other people are incapable of understanding. The solo ended and the silence which followed sounded entirely different from the silence that had preceded it, as if it was now part of something else. The murders are actually a share-loved of true-crime podcasts, but this speaks to the underlying trauma in Anya's ostensible account of a modern relationship, other manifestations including her phobia of tunnels and strongly adverse reaction to any form of soft, squishy, fruit. Anya we learn moved to the UK, to school and to live with her aunt, during the wars that followed the break-up of Yugoslavia, although her parents chose to remain in beseiged Sarajevo where they still live. The Transport Assessment consultants would be expected to undertake community engagement to gain a better understanding of local issues and concerns. This would help them to develop appropriate measures to reduce the impact of the development. What is the council doing in addition to the above?The rings, several plain wedding bands and one signet ring appeared to be made of inexpensive metal. They too may have been removed for patients’ safety or perhaps left in store after their owners had died. I suggest this because, on average, pauper patients did not survive many months in Camberwell House. They were already physically weak on admission. We are also in the process of arranging a dedicated focus group to include the QR4 project team, Assistant Director of Family Help and Youth Justice, as well as colleagues in Community Safety. This group would aim to work towards assessing the effect of the development on community safety. Health and wellbeing How is the council considering the impact of the development on the health and wellbeing of the local community? We understand that parking pressure in the Queens Road area is high, with the proximity to Queens Road station, the presence of the Queens Road council offices and the absence of any Controlled Parking Zone (CPZ) all contributing to the problem. We understand that there are local concerns about this issue and are carrying out specific discussions, to look at the impact on the station. We've engaged with our Transport Policy team and will continue to work with them closely throughout both the design and planning process.

The narrative jumps about with little warning between different locations - London, Cornwall, Glasgow, Split, Cambridge (where Anya studied at university), but the feeling of Anya's unsettledness and disconnect from her surroundings pervades, and the breakdown of her life as she knows it. The main focus of this is her crumbling relationship with the stoic Luke, who is prone to disappearing on her with little notice and being generally distant. The two travel to Anya's hometown to see her parents and sister on a road trip of sorts, and I found these sections to be some of the most memorable of the book. This little spoon, 7cm long, was the beginning of my research into the daily life of those who lived and worked in Camberwell House Lunatic Asylum. I detected that tone I so often encountered then. As though such chaos could never occur within his island, whereas in the Balkans it was inevitable. Luke had later sympathised when I complained about my table, saying he understood how maddening it was – in the context of anthropogenic climate change. He called it the blind spot of any culture – the inability to conceive of its own destruction. Gradually I made connections between Camberwell House Lunatic Asylum and the objects I found. I may not have reached the correct conclusions but I think the items have given me some insight into the daily life of patients and staff. The finds fall into two categories; domestic and leisure. TfL and Network Rail would also be asked to review the application, with the council engaging with both parties to establish possible impacts. In addition, the utilities network would be reviewed as part of the submission process and we expect to have to build a new electric sub-station. A couple of years after my initial search another area of Mistral Garden was dug up and I found many more pipe fragments and several oyster shells. Oysters were a cheap and popular food for many centuries in London. These finds were closer to East House, formerly Alfred House Academy.The novel is structured around the idea of movement and displacement. There is a couple’s trip to France. There are two family visits (one to Cornwall, one to Sarajevo). There is a move from one house to another, from a flat to a “commune” on the titular Asylum Road. Most significantly, there is the narrator’s move as a child from Bosnia to Glasgow, her parents choosing to stay behind despite the war. This is an impressive work and one rather deeper that it may seem on the surface, particularly the underlying hints of trauma mentioned above. It perhaps came for me at the wrong time and in the wrong format though, as I read this immediately after The Shadow King, which dials up portentousness and echoes to 11, and on a Kindle, which for me is always suited to a lighter read, so I think some of the subtlety and depth passed me by. There is no information that we hold regarding potential air pollution from the proposed design. It is proposed that the building is powered by electrical means only, so there would be no noxious gases emitted from the proposed building. The designs for the building are currently undergoing redesign and once this is complete then we would be in a position to comment on the sustainability.
