If I read this book and didn't know who the author was, I really would have assumed that it was written as some weird fantasy by a man. The first two-thirds of the book are filled with intriguing, page-turning plots and interesting characters.

I didn't have to look far to find it and after detaching it from the wall, I put it back on its dish. After his parents disappear, Johannes is the only one aware of Elsa’s existence in the house and he alone is responsible for her fate. But as it is, I was angry the whole time, and I think I only finished the book because someone excitedly suggested it to me. This is the novel on which Taiki Waititi's Jojo Rabbit is based, so if you haven't seen it and you want to see it (and I recommend you do because, in my view, it's one of the best films of the last few years), it's best to ignore my comments, because there will be a bit of compare and contrast going on. This extraordinary novel is seen through the eyes of Johannes, an avid member of the Hitler Youth in the 1940s.While it’s an easy read, there’s subtle commentary throughout the narrative that forces the reader to pay attention and ask a lot of questions. I wasn't allowed to go in her room when she was giving herself her insulin shots, but one time, hearing my mother tell her to use her thigh if her abdomen was sore, I disobeyed and caught her with her green Tracht pulled up past her stomach. There is the nail-biting tension of the plot, the fear for the reader that Elsa will be discovered, with all the attendant repercussions for Johannes.

It explores a less rare from of relationship, it appears, than one believes: love so total that it locks up, isolates and colonises the partner until destruction; annihilates the outside world.
