Yes you can make your own contrast paint with contrast medium. Citadel sells their contrast medium in pots and you can combine it with other acrylics to make your own formulation. The A-Stand range offers a complete solution for the modeller: it includes an extensive colour chart of metallic and transparent tones, as well as primers and varnishes. These paints provide perfect results for any modelling subject, whether aircraft, military or civilian vehicles, figures, science-fiction and fantasy, or dioramas, providing a highly durable finish when dry. Why do you need A-Stand? The excellent fluidity of A-Stand products makes them easy to spray without clogging the airbrush. They also provide a tough and durable finish once dry, allowing the application of any other lacquer, enamel weathering products, or acrylic paint on top without issue. A-Stand products dry to the touch in a short period of time of approximately 30 minutes, depending on the amount of paint applied, ambient humidity and temperature. The range of A-Stand… To use these paints there are basically two options. First, you can prime something white, or do a Zenithal highlight as a base coat. If you go with the prime option, you can either go with the Matt White or Cadre Grey though the airbrush, OR just use the normal Army Painter white primer. Iyanden Yellow Contrast Paint: Depending on what you’re looking for, this is my favorite yellow. It’s not overly bright, it’s got that little bit of brownish orange to it.

Primer Recommendations: A simple white primer works well. If you want to apply a bright color and want a bright result, white is a good starting point. Bright yellow, bright green etc. Primer: A primer is a specific type of paint designed to bond well to the surface it’s applied to, and give a smooth surface. This provides a great base for future layers of paints. Primers are available in many colors. I was able to paint these test models, in around 3-4 minutes each, which means I should be able to repaint my Afrika Korps infantry in a single day using the following method: Prime in either Games Workshop Contrast Undercoat Wraith Bone Spray or Army Painter Color Primer WhiteWith these, it only took about an hour and a half for two big minis, and the results are pretty amazing! Final Thoughts When applying, I noticed that Speedpaints are a bit thinner and runnier than Contrast paints, and the medium pushes the paint into the recesses more aggressively, which helps to create a smoother result even on flat areas. On the other hand, I found Contrast paints slightly easier to control because of their higher viscosity. I felt it was easier to put them on smaller details without accidentally spilling into adjacent areas.

Dark Angels Green Contrast Paint: I love this for grass and leaves. The citadel contrast paints line has a lot of greens, so you can choose your own favorites. Last up we’ve got the red. You’ll notice we’re getting really solid colors here that don’t behave like the Peachy Flesh. These paints are all designed for one solid color which I like personally when painting flames. You could thin them down with some water or medium if you want a more natural blend but, I didn’t do that because I realized too late. With the resin more stable now, I’m happy to say that the bleed through effect is all but gone. On the lower half of the bases, I painted over with light grey acrylic paint, again after 30 minutes, 2 and 24 hours. Around the 30 minute mark, some of the new Speedpaints still bleed through light layers of paint. For example Dragon Carmaine, Maize Yellow and Forest Spite. It’s much more faint than with the original formula, but it is still present. At least on some of the more vibrant colours such as the red, yellow, purple, and green. However, after a longer curing time of about 2 hours, the bleeding stopped.
