This is DreamWorks Animation's second film to release in December, since The Prince of Egypt (1998). The animation is noticeably different but in a good way. It looks great and has an anime vibe, especially with the fight sequences. You can tell that there are different styles going on, but they never overshadow or feel out of place. The music as well is decent. Inside the cave, Puss encounters his past lives and the hooded wolf again, who introduces himself as "Death" and reveals that he wants to obtain Puss's last life as retribution for evading him. Puss cowardly runs away with the map, an act which Kitty and Perrito see from afar. Meanwhile, Goldi reveals that she wishes for a real family. Even though it's to the Bears' dismay, they oblige to help her if it's what she really wants. There were no visible scratches, blemishes, or imperfections that could detract from the viewing experience. The visual quality appeared to be satisfactory, providing an enjoyable visual presentation when played in the appropriate device, such as a Blu-ray player. This is the second DreamWorks Animation film to be directed by Joel Crawford after The Croods: A New Age. But the one character that surprised me the most was the introduction of The Wolf. A somewhat major villain of the story, although he's more of an obstacle for Puss to fight against. I won't spoil it here, but DreamWorks did a great job in making The Wolf a far more terrifying villain who isn't there just to be a big bad guy for Puss to fight against. He fits in with Puss' story-arc and DreamWorks somehow managed to make one of the best animated villains I've seen in a long time.

This film features the first theatrical on-screen appearance of Shrek, Donkey, Gingy, and Pinocchio since Shrek Forever After, which was released in 2010. First off, Puss is a far more interesting character in this movie. I still love him in Shrek 2 and how we are introduced to him. But this movie dives far more deeper into his character and shows us his vulnerability. His attempt to reclaim his 9 nines really shows us the side of him he wishes to keep hidden. And his confrontation with a new villain (a wolf) really brings out his fears and insecurities for the very first time. It's some interesting stuff to see, while still not emasculating Puss in the process. He's still a great character with three-dimensional aspects of him. This 2nd spin-off film of Puss In Boots has no right to be as good as it is, yet I'm happy that it is. Sometimes life just throws you a bone in the most unlikely of places, and The Last Wish is one of them. The story is great, the characters are great, the animation is great, and the film itself is just a great time to watch, especially with family.

The song used in the credits, "La Vida es Una", was sung by the Colombian singer, Karol G., making this film the first DreamWorks film to feature a Latin American singer in the end credits. For the longest time, I thought it was the Terminator or Alien case, where the first two movies are great, and the rest are trash. Even when I saw the trailer for The Last Wish, I wasn't impressed and thought it would at best be a decent film but one that wasn't worth watching on the big screen.
