There is a very artificial, self conscious attempt to use language that sounds "down-with-the-kids" which is quite cringy. Alice is shadowed by a mysterious character in a cat hoodie, while the Tweedle twins are social media influencers with an abusive sexual interest in transgender girls.Other contributors and celebrities featured include Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, John Legend, Jack Monroe, Caitlyn Jenner, RuPaul, Laura Dockrill, Conchita Wurst, Andrew McMillan and Emma Watson.

Juno has such a warm, witty, hilarious and non patronising way of explaining and sharing her story, and this book exudes so much positivity. I'm aware, now, that Juno Dawson is a successful author of teen fiction, and I feel this is also the target audience for this book. She grew up in West Yorkshire and worked for several years as a teacher, specialising in PSHCE, before becoming a journalist.

The voice in these works is not unlike that of an agony aunt, or rather a cool and queer older sibling literate both in the numerous issues that surround growing up LGBTQ+ as well as the lingo and speech patterns that make such insights accessible to a young readership. I think she offers lots of interesting observations, arguments and particularly on the points of gender, childhood and the way as a society we engage with gender did she make some really important points.

There's a whole load of mine-fields when it comes to political correctness and misconception over these topics, and Juno artfully describes her own experience with these, which was fascinating and eye-opening. Her 2014 self-help manual, This Book Is Gay, was once challenged by an Alaskan parent who discovered it in a children’s section of the local library. It also does a great job of debunking that within our society that people think can’t be changed, such as definitions of gender and sex and how people can define themselves! Been sitting on this review for two months now, trying to land on a star rating, and how to articulate what I wanted to say. And two years ago, as Juno Dawson went to tell her mother she was (and actually, always had been) a woman, she started to realise just how wrong we've been getting it.

I think what’s particularly good about Dawson’s book is that it’s written so conversationally – you can imagine sitting opposite her in a café listening to her tell you this. In 2017, Dawson published The Gender Games, her first book aimed at adults, discussing themes of gender as well as her own life experiences. I didn't know anything about the trans culture (and still don't know much to be honest), but this book was eye-opening and a great and quick read.

The main thesis of the book is that "we have all been fucked by Gender," which is a social construct, aka something completely made up by humans and therefore malleable, but which most of us inexplicably treat like hard and fast live or die rules.It was during an Australian book tour for Clean that the idea of appropriating Alice in Wonderland popped up.
