With the help of the genie, Aladdin manages to produce such a gift, sending his mother to the sultan’s palace with the platters, and the sultan demands to meet the man who will become his son-in-law. But the environment of the story is clearly one which betrays its medieval origins: a world in which women are to be bought and sold by the highest bidder (the sultan is happy to have his daughter married off to either Aladdin or the vizier’s son, depending on which of them can produce the more expensive gift – and he grants Aladdin permission to marry the princess without ever having met the young man).

Aladdin and His Lamp, a 1952 fantasy adventure film with Johnny Sands and Patricia Medina as Aladdin and Princess Jasmine. The Arabian Nights, episode of the Rankin/Bass series Festival of Family Classics (1972-1973), inspired by different tales of the collection, also including Aladdin. However, the vizier – the sultan’s chief adviser – is not happy with this plan, because he had planned for his own son to marry Lady Badar al-Budur. Badroulbadour falls for his disguise and commands the "woman" to stay in her palace in case of any illnesses. Scrooge describes Aladdin as a brigand who used the legend of the lamp to cover the origins of his ill-gotten gains.

Designed by Bowie collaborators Barnbrook creative studio, the book pays tribute to a seminal album and an image that will live forever more in rock ‘n’ roll history – ‘the Mona Lisa of pop’, Aladdin Sane. Notably, ethnic groups in Chinese history have long included Muslim groups, including large populations of Uighurs, and the Hui people as well as the Tajiks whose origins go back to Silk Road travelers. The story states that Aladdin lives in China, although ‘Aladdin’ sounds more like an Arabic name than Chinese, and the other characters in the story also have Arabic names. For instance, the ruler is referred to as " Sultan" rather than " Emperor", as in some retellings, and the people in the story are Muslims and their conversation is filled with Muslim platitudes.

The sorcerer's more powerful and evil brother plots to destroy Aladdin for killing his brother by disguising himself as an old woman known for her healing powers.
