When I embarked on Clarice Bean, That’s Me, I think I sort of tricked myself into writing something personal and different.

The Clarice Bean series is a series of children's books written and illustrated by English author Lauren Child from 1999. She suggested that I send my portfolio to her business manager, to see if she had any advice or even the vaguest idea about what I should be doing. Unfortunately, Kingfisher couldn’t get an American co-publisher for the book and without that they felt it was impossible to publish. Though Clarice started life as a picture-book character, Child has now written several novels about her adventures.
