Art is without a doubt a very good standard lens with autofocus for Canon, Nikon, Panasonic Lumix S or Sony full-frame cameras. The Z-Nikkor also focuses fast and reliably and is sealed thoroughly – an important feature that is missing on the Sigma Art.

But the Sigma offers autofocus via a ring-type ultrasonic motor (with full-time manual override), which means it wins out on practicality. Our Image Engineering MTF tests were carried out with the lens mounted to Canon’s 50-million-pixel DSLR, the EOS 5DS R. So what I don't get is : if the camera front-focused a little, it should still be within the "sharp focus range".

Although it is half of a stop slower and doesn’t offer quite the same level of edge-to-edge sharpness, it can still produce very satisfying results even at the fastest apertures. Closest focusing is 40cm from the sensor plane, which is fairly typical for a lens of this focal length and aperture. distortion figure you can confidently go about your work knowing any subject with straight lines will be rendered faithfully.

This is exceptional performance, which will allow shooting of high contrast subjects with no qualms or worries.

Again, the characteristics of the optical design focus on this, so to speak, while the aperture diaphragm is based on 11 curved blades compared with the 8 blades of Sigma’s previous 50mm Art lens. That’s not an altogether bag thing, as it can give an attractive look to many types of image, including portraits and still life shots. Our Applied Imaging tests tell us the lens resolves a good level of sharpness in the centre when it’s used wide open at f/1.This system ensures quiet and fast autofocus yet, you also have full-time manual focus override accessed by simply rotating the focus ring.
