Despite its smaller overall size, the axe still features a full-size axehead, offering effective cutting power. The Fiskars X10 is also identical to the Gerber Freescape hatchet, just with different branding and color. The Gerber is often much more accessible in the US than the X10 model.

Its weight and design make it an ideal splitting axe for younger people who may struggle with heavier axes. The shorter handle length does make it more challenging to use as I couldn’t get much leverage. All of the power needs to be supplied through your swing. This axe isn’t suited for anything more than cutting kindling. I wouldn’t suggest you could do any significant splitting or felling. The axe features a thin yet wide-edged blade that guarantees effortless, precise cuts in fresh, resinous wood types such as spruce or pine. Its exceptional cutting prowess is complemented by a lightweight, sturdy shaft that ensures perfect balance, making it an ideal choice for both general yard work and small construction projects around your home. The Fiskars Norden N10 reminds me of the Fiskars X10. The carbon steel axe head is almost identical. I noticed that the handle of the Norden N10 is not as straight as the old X10. The Norden N10 contains a slight curve which is a real plus for me. Fiskars Norden N10 in use The head is a 1lb stout wedge shape that makes it decent at both splitting and chopping greenwood up to about 4-5″ wide.

While they are interesting, these axes have never really spoken to me as they have the same head design, material, and performance as the X-series axes, but can cost 3 times more. The Fiskars X21’s length and weight allow more power to be applied, making it excel at splitting larger logs around 12 inches in diameter. The 17” chopping axes have a unique head shape compared to the rest. It has a thinner wedge shape that lends itself to more chopping “bushcraft” type of work and less to splitting (but there is a separate splitting version). Model

In my experience the 28″ and 23″ chopping axes can chop or split up to around a 12” log. So they can fell a tree or break down firewood and can be used as a general “work axe”. While I think there is a clear winner for a dedicated kindling hatchet, there are some serious alternatives that can do quite a bit more and still be a decent kindling tool. Fiskars axes are a great choice, but it can be hard to know which to get because they have so many models. And they don’t do a great job helping people tell them apart. Fortunately, the heads are identical between equal sized hatchets, so the only thing that changes are the handles and the sheaths. But Fiskars offers many options, and it’s not always clear what the best choice is. or 17″ axes will (or can) be used with two-handed swings and can put your legs/feet in the danger zone. Inexperienced axe users tend to chop in an arc motion, which can lead to a shorter axe hitting their toes/ankles/shins either off a bounce or just after passing through the wood. So if size and weight are the most important factors – then this is a capable little hatchet. But I would go for the X7 if possible.

The unique blade geometry will cut deep into green or dry wood before splitting clean through with one swing and uses the extra weight to gain momentum. The sturdy shaft and 3D grip help you get a really good handhold, and the balance is machine perfect. It’s 17.5” (ish) in length and can be used one or two-handed. The larger head is uniquely longer and thinner than all the other Fiskars axes, making it well suited for the wilderness and bushcraft. It’s a very versatile chopper. The X11 has a heavier specialized head with flared cheeks that help fling the wood apart when splitting. The 17″ handle allows it to be used one-handed or two, so you can put some real power behind it for larger pieces of wood.

We could only conclude that this axe is a perfect replacement for the Fiskars X7 and X10. The whole feels better in hand because of the slight curve. The axe is heavier, but in this case this isn't a disadvantage. You have a little more body as you use the axe.

The X7 is probably the better for basic car camping – where your wood comes pre-cut and you might just need to pop a few pieces apart for kindling. The X10 is more of a forest axe and chopper that can also be a kindling maker. Basically what will be a bigger pain: More swings when the work starts or carrying the extra size/weight.
