How do they compare with the older 121s? The character is similar but the newer speakers are a little better in most respects. Speaker Cables without Connectors: If you are not sure about the lenght or need longer than standard cables with plugs, choose this option. Have had the dali zensor 1 for about 1½ years (denon amp) but at high levels the top gets to agressive,intrusive and i generally find the top to loud (not a good balance, the bostons are much better), used them with a small subwoofer and that helped a bit with the bright sound and the bass that is not as good as the bostons. You may especially have a hard time using Tube amplifiers which are traditionally very low power compared to Class A/B or Class D speakers.

One of the natural alternative to the Wharfedale 220 is the Diamond 225 which is located one step higher in Wharfedale's Passive Bookshelf selection. However, if you are in a larger room, or are looking for speakers to suit a TV surround system, or even for a venue, then we would recommend you buy bigger speakers that include an external subwoofer. I wrote this for a colleague who asked about them and since I already went through the effort to write it up, may as well post here. 🙂The already popular Diamond 121’s have been upgraded by Wharfdale into this new 220 model. One of the biggest and most recognisable changes is the change of material for the ‘speaker cabinet’. The tweeters are almost exactly the same as the 121 model which is good as we loved them on the older model. Their deep waveguide helps the effectiveness of the high frequencies being heard. A ferrite magnet helps produce a smooth sound also. The proof is as always listen to. The tweeter remains unchanged. He's still in a deep-seated waveguide, which improves the efficiency (particularly through the crossover region). One odd thing, I've never been one to swear by "break-in" but the longer these play, they better they seem to sound, and I've read people noting the sound continues to improve, potentially over weeks and even months. I've noted a subjective improvement, with the bass deepening and the clarity from the tweeters improving over several hours listening. I wonder if it has something to do with the materials. The woofer is woven kevlar, very stiff material so I wonder if it flexes and loosens up over time.
