There is much confusion today over the nature of faith. It is reported that, when asked to define faith, a little boy in Sunday school responded, “Believing what you know isn’t true.” Many of the “new atheists” place faith against science and evidence. They say that Christians have faith that God exists but that atheists have empirical evidence for science. Christians have faith, but scientists have knowledge. This comparison misunderstands the nature of faith in God. Strong's 1410: (a) I am powerful, have (the) power, (b) I am able, I can. Of uncertain affinity; to be able or possible. Pursuing the appropriate act of faith, man is ordinarily motivated by his existential questions. While the human person, with the use of his reason, possesses and poses his questions, he is also the recipient of wonder, an experience of awe when in the presence of finite beauty, truth or goodness, which propels him to the Infinite fulfillment of these transcendental experiences. It is God seeking the person in, with and through different occasions, people and objects that inducts the person into this awareness. It is this awareness that allows him to formulate his curiosity and clearly express his questions. Synthesizing the questions and seeking the answers is a serious, lifelong commitment to struggle through the tension of this questioning-and-answering, which, if cooperated with,eventually becomes a part of the person’s very definition by leading him to the full act of faith called for by God.

As the Council of Chalcedon stated it, “. . . the distinction of natures being by no means taken away by the union, but rather the property of each nature being preserved . . .” 6 Jesus’s human nature is human, and human only. His divine nature is divine, and divine only. For example, Jesus’s human nature did not become all-knowing through its union with God the Son, and neither did his divine nature become ignorant of anything. If any of the natures underwent a change in its essential nature, then Christ is no longer truly and fully human, or truly and fully divine. God the Father, therefore, is not merely spoken of as a symbol of fatherhood or as being “like a father,” but as being Father. So with the Son as Son, and with the Spirit as Love. The relation is of the divine essence and inseparable from it. To divide the essence from the relation is to make the relation a creature and to cause confusion in the understanding of the divinity. As a Family, the Godhead’s relationality is central to himself and to the dynamism and veil of mystery that surrounds him.

My friends, what good is it to say you have faith, when you don't do anything to show you really do have faith? Can this kind of faith save you? Faith can be defined as a gift from God, a supernatural virtue, which calls for a submission of the intellect and will and which, through the grace of God, allows the person to believe, as true, what God has revealed. It can further be defined as a total and free self-commitment to God, through the working of the Holy Spirit, which willingly assents to the revelation which He gives to man.

 

In this text, Paul strikes a contrast between the false teachers and Timothy. He says, “But you, as a person dedicated to God, keep away from all that.” “A person dedicated to God” can also be translated “man of God.” It was a tremendous privilege for Timothy to be called a man of God. It is only used here and in 2 Timothy 3:17 in the New Testament. “This special designation was also given to Moses (Deut. 33:1), Samuel (1 Sam. 9:6), Elijah (1 Kings 17:18), and David (Neh. 12:24); so Timothy was in good company.” 1 This title referred to somebody wholly possessed by God and who spoke for him. Where the false teachers were men of this world, Timothy was a man of God. Seeing the extended hand of God, the will awakens the intellect to accept the offer. This will and the intellect, inflamed by love, make this affirmation and assist the person in persevering in his act of faith. God’s grace initiates, supports, and pervades this entire internal process within the person. Having once made the act of faith, the person chooses to what degree he will let God work. If he adheres to God’s will and walks the correct path, the person can attain and persevere credere in Deum, and the heights of “likeness” unto God Himself. The fact that Jesus is truly and fully human is clear from the fact that he has a human body (Luke 24:39), a human mind (Luke 2:52), and a human soul (Matthew 26:38). Jesus does not just look like a man. He does not just have some aspects of what is essential for true humanity but not others. Rather, he possess full humanity. Biblically, however, the object of faith is not the divine offer but the Person of Jesus Christ. Faith in Him is what saves, not just believing His promises or accepting facts about Him. Saving faith has to be more than accepting facts. Even demons have that kind of faith ( James 2:19). One sees greatness in power and control and the right to exercise violence when one is in the right, and is depicted predominantly in male terms.
