Inside and outside of his home country, Junji Ito’s manga is celebrated as the best of Japanese horror writing. Shiver is a collection of short stories by legendary horror manga-ka, Junji Ito. He’s a master of pacing, with a visual imagination that is just indescribable. I would cheerfully put him up against legends like Graham Ingels or Bernie Wrightson--even Basil Wolverton, though he's known more for the grotesque than outright horror--any day. Ito takes that Lovecraftian approach to the wide open unknown and runs with it in this story. The Thing That Drifted Ashore presents us with an enormous, impossible, strange creature. Ito is a fiction writer, first and foremost, so having something that is personal nonfiction feels delightfully special and intimate. I also love how we get Ito’s own commentary after each story, along with notes and preliminary sketches. Seeing some of the groundwork helps me to appreciate these stories all the more.

a story about a strange but beautiful woman named Tomie who wishes for an artist to accurately capture her beauty, and all the misfortune that happens as a result. This is the first chapter from the book TOMIE , which i am yet to read but after reading this , i am even more excited , and wth was the drawing at the end. MASTERPIECE!

The Long Dream feels a bit too familiar, the dreams are played more for laughs than really showing the horror aspect of them. Being told a character was looking for a restroom for eight years is always going to be funny to me, you either need to show what it's like (because the image I have is definitely funny) or find something else. Of course, the humour may be what he intended, and not every story has to be straight horror, but I still think it was a great premise that could've lead to a better story.

Each story has something different to offer. “The Long Dream” is quite haunting, “Used Record” is chilling and gruesome, and “Honored Ancestors” takes an unusual twist. The artwork is superb — detailed and moody, using such fine ink lines to create such disturbing imagery. The term master of horror is often attributed to American author Stephen King without any argument. Turn your eyes to Japan, however, and you’ll discover a writer and artist capable of injecting a far more potent amount of fear into his readers’ veins. Junji Ito is a mangaka who understands phobias, existential anxieties, and the terror of the unknown better than any other horror writer on Earth. Combining a deft artist’s eye with a boundless and terrifying imagination, Junji Ito stands head and shoulders above every other horror writer around. Imagine your balloon headed doppelgangers hunting you the moment you step out of your house? i cant imagine , i am already shit scared. The concept was exceptional. Again i cant with this man , his brain is just wired differently then rest of us. Born in Gifu Prefecture in 1963, he was inspired from a young age by his older sister's drawing and Kazuo Umezu's comics and thus took an interest in drawing horror comics himself. Nevertheless, upon graduation he trained as a dental technician, and until the early 1990s he juggled his dental career with his increasingly successful hobby — even after being selected as the winner of the prestigious Umezu prize for horror manga.If you’ve ever done a passive search for Ito, or if you’re already a big Ito fan, then you will have seen all the jokes and memes that have grown out of this story. In addition to winning the Kazuo Umezu Prize for Tomie, Ito was nominated for an Eisner Award in both 2003 and 2009 for Uzumaki. He has since won three Eisner Awards: one for his manga adaptation of Frankenstein in 2019; one for Remina in 2021; and one for Venus in the Blind Spot, also in 2021. Alternatively, you could start with some of the best-known stories, such as Uzumaki, Tomie, and the Shivershort story collection and then branch off from there. Will there be more Junji Ito stories? Case in point, grease and “Greased.” While the severity inherent to the premise moves beyond realistic belief, it’s only an extension of a base human disgust. Yui’s family runs a yakiniku restaurant and they live on the second floor above it, but the building’s ventilation is very poor. As a result, the grease and general oily nature of the restaurant wafts up to the top floor as well, making it impossible for Yui to escape the grimy feeling. It’s a horrendous thought: having to deal with oily substances that seep into the furniture, walls, and air so thoroughly that you can never feel clean and at rest in your own home. Honored Ancestors (from The Face Burglar, 顔泥棒 Kao Dorobou), a story about an amnesiac girl and the encounter that caused her to lose her memories and about carrying on the family line. At all costs.

The most common obsessions are with beauty, long hair, and beautiful girls, especially in his Tomie and Flesh-Colored Horror comic collections. For example: A girl's hair rebels against being cut off and runs off with her head; Girls deliberately catch a disease that makes them beautiful but then murder each other; a woman treats her skin with lotion so she can take it off and look at her muscles, but the skin dissolves and she tries to steal her sister's skin, etc. Yuuji watches as Rina's doctor comes to visit her, but she screams and slams the door in his face. Yuuji half-remembers the face of the doctor who attended Yuuji's grandfather; and comes to suspect they are the same person. He debates over whether or not to tell Rina's family that his grandfather is responsible for the curse on their daughter. Hideo encourages Yuuji to keep quiet about it, but Yuuji resolves he must tell the truth. As he is about to go over to their house, he sees Rina in the garden outside, apparently recovered. She is calm and happy, and her skin looks completely normal. This is a short story collection which revolves around a pair of siblings who cause chaos everywhere they go. This curse builds up a mind-shattering state of paranoia and obsession that, eventually, leads to death. But it’s through his creepy, eerie, unsettling approach to horror that this ordinary story becomes funny. In an uneasy and nervous kind of way.Una recopilación brutal. Ito has mentioned filmmaker Guillermo del Toro as an influence, but del Toro has also been influenced by Ito’s work. Ito recalls, “20 years ago, director of Shape of Water,Guillermo del Torocame to Japan and said he was a big fan and wanted to see me…I’m very happy that he’s a fan of mine and enjoys my work.” In fact, the two were working together on a game called Silent Hills ( unfortunately, the project was canceled). Also in the usual Ito style, his way of drawing facial expressions and emotions is consistently outstanding in Sensor. The phenomenon spreads slowly, and people begin to wonder if it’s contagious. There is no rhyme or reason for why people would begin acting this way. Until, of course, there is. Body horror is what he’s most known for. The result is all kinds of terrifying body contortions – as made famous in works such as Uzumaki and Shiver. It’s often this imagery that circulates online and has brought in readers. Through Junji Ito’s manga, he forces us to confront the demons of his imagination, and it seems like he enjoys it.

Ito’s works have been adapted multiple times. In addition to the Tomie adaptations, one of the most notable adaptations is the horror anime anthology series Junji Ito Collection. This 12-episode series adapts iconic Ito stories, including “Fashion Model,”“Shiver,” and “Smashed,” among many others.
