They get to know each other through their messages for about the first 25% of the book and that’s where the story really kicks in. Utterly delightful…Eggers touches on deep topics with a light hand, effortlessly building suspense and a wonderful sense of adventure. I would have loved for there to be a scene with Henrietta where she brings Nick somewhere as part of a study on parallel worlds.

I have no idea what about this book appealed to me, but I sure am glad that I added this one to my wishlist. A friend of mine, a middle school math teacher, likes to say, ‘If you can’t explain it to an 8-year-old, you don’t get it. Yet the blurbs on this new title were from folks I trust like Jon Klassen and Jon Scieszka and Annie Barrows. What Lucy has that no one else did, however, is a secret letter, and the love of her foster parents Soledad and Leo, and her oldest friend Zach. This is a clever, creative story that will leave you wondering about it days after you read the last page.

Yet I would bet every penny I’ve earned in my life that Dave Eggers wouldn’t touch a sequel to this book with a ten-foot-pole. A treasure trove… If we learn the lessons of this short, sharp, crisp little book, maybe we’ll pull it off again.Young readers will be drawn to the original thinking, wisdom, and sly humor of the animals, as they comment on the strange behaviors of people without seeming human themselves. I mean really, what would you do if you found the one, but were precluded by the laws of physics from realizing your dream? It reminds me of Richard Linklater’s School of Rock (2003) in that it is a great work that can be enjoyed – the full spectrum of enjoyment!
