As I say, I've no compaints at all with the PS5 side, but I'd like to know that I'm getting the most out of my film setup. The 55QA5D63DB’s combination of a Quantum Dot colour system (which can deliver cleaner, purer, brighter colours than the usual LCD colour filter approach) and direct LED lighting (where the LEDs sit directly behind the screen rather than around its edges) raise hopes of a better performance level than you’d usually get for so little money. With just the right content, the 55QA5D63DB can deliver some pretty engaging pictures. Unfortunately, though, most of the time its picture quality varies between disappointing and flat-out poor.

The LK3C Firstly, the QA5D TV (pictured above) has been launched, available in 43, 50, 55 and 65-inch sizes. Toshiba’s first Quantum Dot TV offers intense colour and cinematic picture quality, harnessing the brand’s full TRU Picture Engine, including TRU Resolution powerful upscaling, TRU Micro Dimming and TRU Flow MEMC technology, as well as Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, delivering extraordinary big screen moments at home.

It’s worth adding, finally, that all of the TVs in Toshiba’s new range feature direct LED lighting, and that Toshiba has just done a deal with TikTok that will see the video network app becoming available via a firmware update to all Toshiba UK TV models released since 2019. The TV’s key feature is its Voice Remote with built-in Alexa voice assistant, allowing users to to easily find, launch, and control content, while the UF3D also supports Apple’s Airplay streaming tech. As Toshiba’s flagship TV for 2022, it includes all three of the Japanese manufacturer’s TRU Picture Engine technologies: TRU Resolution, TRU Micro Dimming and TRU Flow. There’s support for Dolby Atmos, the Dolby Vision HDR format, Chromecast is built in and Google Assistant can be accessed via the remote control. Sound is provided by Onkyo, while the QA5D uses Android TV as its operating system.

The speakers even have the dynamic range and power to keep on growing in step with an escalating action scene – something many TVs costing way more fail to do – and the sound consistently has direct impact, rather than sounding as if it’s all getting swallowed up somewhere behind the screen.
