This manga encapsulates a lot of triggering things like suicide, rape and sexual assault. I don’t recommend reading this series if you have a hard time with those certain topics because these books just throw it right at you. Asano described the young Punpun as a fundamentalist, which leads to his regrets and dislike of gray areas later. Asano also ascribed these characteristics to the other characters: "The main characters in Punpun always remain children in the way their purity leads them to fail and become social misfits." At end of the manga, Asano was originally going to make Punpun die while saving a child of a friend, but he felt that it was too "clean" of an ending. He continued the theme of nothing going right for Punpun by making him live and by denying Punpun solitude after Aiko's death by pairing him up with Sachi. In the final chapter, Punpun's experiences are contrasted with those of his childhood friend Harumi to show Punpun from the perspective of a normal person. Harumi sees Punpun surrounded by friends, but in reality nothing went right for him, further emphasizing the theme of failure. The publisher is unconvinced by Sachi and Punpun's manga, disliking the main character's "needless" depression. While Shishido gets badly injured after being mistaken for a shoplifter, and ends up paralyzed for life, Punpun's childhood friends Seki and Shimizu, who stayed very close, drift apart as Shimizu joins a cult led by the mysterious and exuberant Pegasus. Punpun, having distanced himself from Sachi who is now continuing the manga on her own, starts using a fake name and acting like a completely different person to shield himself from his depression, but ends up running into Aiko by chance.

He feels, thinks, lives on a different plane of existence and perception. His interactions are apparently normal: he has schoolmates, a family, a sweetheart, his own unlikely image of God appearing time and again in moments of distress. Except that the reader never sees him talking to anybody, except through indirect speech. There's a distance between Punpun and the others that words cannot seem to cross without losing the property of sound that makes them real. He does communicate, but it's a kind of communication whose form is as incongruous as his physical presence.

Punpun Punyama is a normal elementary school kid. He has a group of friends he hangs out with, has some big dreams, is getting more curious about the world (wants to find some porn as well), and there’s a girl he’s crushing on. This is his weird, surreal, melancholy story… of the time he was in elementary school. The Initial Impression El inicio de Buenas noches, Punpun es, como el resto de la obra, una genialidad. Punpun asks his uncle about getting to Kagoshima, and is told that plane or train is expensive and it's too far to walk. Meanwhile, Seki tries to coerce his drunk, broke dad into reopening their lunch store. Shimizu's mother sends him on an errand. On the way out, he meets the God of Poop and complains that the kamemeha he taught him did not work. Seki catches Shimi being weird, and when Shimi tells him he just spoke with the God of Poop, Seki punches him. Seki sees Mrs. Shimizu's wallet and asks to borrow some cash, only to chide Shimi for actually agreeing. Punpun runs into them. Harumi and Komatsu, waiting for Punpun, entertain the idea of searching for the money in the abandoned miso factory, and Seki appears, with Punpun and Shimi, and offers to show them where the factory is just to prove that the tape was a prank and there's no such thing as free money. It has everything I want the humour, the struggles we've all had with existing and I just love the art in this manga
