The quality of the games have been well documented for over 20 years; we all know they're all-time classics but that's not what this review should be about imo.

It would be like a 3D mario collection including the original Super Mario Bros 1-3 as bonus Content and it being glossed over.Bit of a strange choice with the individual launcher thing but other than that it sounds exactly how I wanted it. It's a flourish that stays on modern consoles, but as far as the core gameplay goes, both games run at 60fps. I played MGS1 again a few years ago and actually felt like it held up extremely well to play personally. Could've handled it slightly better on PS5 though, with them all occupying one space on the home screen, like how you could switch between PS4 and PS5 versions of the same game. The digital packaging surrounding the three classics doesn't quite feel like the labour of love it should do, but once you sink into the PS1 original, Sons of Liberty, or Snake Eater, it's abundantly clear there's still nothing quite like Metal Gear Solid.

This features a form of anti-aliasing in parts to reduce moire patterns, yet elements of the image are left untreated with a similar result to the AA-less Switch version. That's a big setback next to the HD Collection, which runs at 60fps on older 360 and PS3 hardware - and even on PS2, MGS2 was built to run at 60fps. That takes us from the series' inception in 1987 right up to MGS3 in 2004, with room for a Master Collection Volume 2 to expand beyond that. Like if they were to do a remake collection of uncharted 1-3 would be separated like mgs and ff pixel remaster. The reason being that the aforementioned game retcons/reveals so much about a previously established character that you will have a fundamentally different experience depending on which option you choose.

Konami's Master Collection gets by on the ever-lasting quality of its fallen series, not the means that have brought it back. The front-end menus are a highlight, with neatly laid out extra content for each game and the rare luxury of choice between multiple versions of MGS1.

At 30fps with unresponsive, heavy controls, it feels a lot more dated compared to the rest of the package. The changes to their visuals in the Master Collection are minimal at best, meaning we still get a native 1280x720 presentation on both games for PS5, Series X/S and Nintendo Switch. a modder has already patched the collection so that it runs the games at 1080p and even 4k (with old textures of course) but that is a steep improvement over what konami released! If there's one redeeming feature of the PC release, it's that we have the flexibility to fix some of these problems ourselves. The upside for Switch is, much like its AA issue, texture filtering is at least engaged in the MGS3 portion of the collection.

It's likely an incidental benefit of running either game from SSD-equipped modern consoles, but it's a clear plus. I can't fault the implementation and honestly prefer it this way to using a clunky anniversary interface that is an after thought. The first MGS, for example, runs via an emulator at the same 240p resolution and frame-rate as original PS1 hardware. It’s a credit limit that’s sits alongside your PayPal account which you can use for your online purchases. The Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection bundles together three of the greatest games ever made, but does so in a convoluted manner.This collection includes the classic versions of the games, complete with minimal edits to copyrighted contents. There's something to be said for having all these classics in one convenient package for today's consoles and PC.
