As an avid reader and a fan of Sarah Jessica Parker’s former imprint SJP for Hogarth, I knew this story would be captivating, thought-provoking, and fresh, expanding my perspective beyond measure. We focused on the lost marmoset as a leading theme from the story, accentuating the strangeness and untethered feeling of being alone in the city. I think the closest comparison you could compare this book to is Disorientation, which is about another PhD student trying to uncover a secret about a Chinese poet she’s studying. The narrative switches between three time periods were sometimes rather difficult to follow, partly due to the Chinese names which were unfamiliar to me.

I enjoyed the two different stories of two generations in this novel and how they impact one another - the story of Rita and Jing from Taipei, who emigrate to the U. If it came to be that an author felt that I was the right person to pursue the screen rights, that would be a cherry on the sundae. I saw so much of myself in the main character, it was just really heartwarming and important to read!

Listen, if Elysha or Kim—and Kim’s story is so big, it’s so epic, you could easily see that it could translate well to a miniseries on this particular family; I can imagine that it would have a home in cinema—I would be honored to have that conversation. At a lunch for A Place for Us, you said that you had a certain anxiety about coming into the book world feeling like you were a reader and not an editor, and that you were worried that people wouldn’t take the imprint seriously.

Our protagonist in A Quitter’s Paradise is Eleanor, a fourth year PhD student whose mother has just died. A Quitter’s Paradise features two major storylines - one in the present where Eleanor is seems to be making increasingly poor decisions after quitting her PhD program and another focused on her parent’s and childhood. While the story is about the quintessential American family, it provides many layers to challenge one’s thought process.I would recommend checking it out at least once if you’re interested in any of the themes I’ve mentioned during this review, or if the synopsis ends up vibing with you in a way that resonates.
