I was too young when it happened to really understand the horrors and after starting the series, I wanted to know more of the "why" and "how" behind it all. Schwartz, usually a stickler for facts in her book, brushes this aside by stating that no one really wants to get into the mind of such a monster, do they? During these strange seizures, her eyes would bulge like a frightened animal, and she would begin to salivate, literally frothing at the mouth. Milwaukee continues the struggle to rebuild its sense of community after citywide crises: first in 1991 following the discovery of Dahmer's crimes, and then post-2020 when the death of George Floyd in police custody strained already fractured police-community relations. As an aside, I am sure that in the novelisation of the Star Wars movie the Ewoks were portrayed as vicious little bastards who roasted and dined on the Stormtroopers they had killed, but I doubt that has anything to do with Dahmer.

On July 23, 1991, Milwaukee chemist Lionel Dahmer discovered - along with the rest of the world - that his son Jeffrey was a murderer who, over a period of many years, had carried out some of the most ghastly crimes ever committed in the United States. This is a really well told story of the terrible crimes committed by Dahmer and his life before and after. I've read and watched several things on Dahmer so I didn't expect much new information from this book. Somehow, I ended up thinking that reading something written by one of his friends was A Thing To Do in place of, I dunno, reading about muscled science freaks with superpowers. It is both a touching family memoir and a haunting confession - the searing account of a man who never relented in his effort to fathom the deepest quarters of his son's affliction, even as they pointed to his own.
