The only thing I could fault it for is being a bit predictable, although I am glad everything turned out the way it did so I can’t really complain. But perhaps a surprise would have been nice! It’s gripping and immersive. The lead character, Patch, is a strong role model; so much so that we ask ourselves frequently now, “what would Patch do in this situation?” Once on board the ship, Patch is soon discovered by another young girl, Lilian who is travelling without her parents, and the two girls soon fall in together, with Lilian trying to help Patch stay undetected on the ship. Watching their friendship grow and develop was lovely, but I also liked seeing all of Patch’s interactions with people on board. She meets and talks with lots of different people, continuing her friendship with the boy who first got her into this mess, but also encountering lots of other characters in her travels around the ship. I also liked the historical aspect to the story, seeing life on board a steamship, and seeing the different ways of etiquette amongst the staff and passengers.This is an intricately woven and skilfully paced story which I’m sure will keep readers aged nine to twelve gripped to the end. Being set in 1910 it also provides many starting points for discussion, about class, the perceived status of women at that time and the working conditions endured by most people. stars. Interesting story, but but there were some things that I didn't like. Mainly - (I cannot even believe I'm writing this) SPOILER ALERT the main character's mother is a professional stowaway, and one character in the book actually calls it unironically "a career". I don't understand. So the mother rejected the responsibility of bringing up a child and instead ran away to be a professional stowaway on boats. And they even call her "brave" at some point. Isn't this - what is the buzz word of today - "problematic"? ("What does your mummy do for living?" "Oh, she is a professional cheater and liar. Isn't that exciting?")

And the third one was called Grounded, which was people trying to get to Mars, but there’s stuff getting in the way. Well, when we spoke with Penna, we asked him outright if they complete their mission to Mars, and though he didn’t directly confirm it, he had a lot to say about hope – and how much effort they put into making sure the film ends with that hope.The book is aimed at children older than my daughter, for self-reading, but she had no problem understanding the storyline and it stretched her vocabulary as I read it to her.
