Bythell has a more cautionary view of the business, as he made clear in “The Diary of a Bookseller,” published in an American edition in 2018, and “Confessions of a Bookseller,” just out in a U. Shaun at times pays her compliments (to us, not her) but mostly he is down on her (to the reader, I don’t know whether to her personally…I get the feeling he does not ridicule her to her face). Bythell knows me well enough to know that I wouldn’t falsely puff a book (I never provide pre-publication endorsements on point of principle). The narrative is also honest in showing how awful and narcissistic she is and it punishes her for it until she is forced to change or at least give up. But my curiosity was piqued - what would prompt a reviewer to be so adamant about defending an apparently unlikeable protagonist?So here I go, at least for two towns: in Leuven, go to Barboek or Boekarest or Plato, and in Gent go to the fantastic Paard van Troje. His dismissive attitude towards the pension office was a minus here, being his own fault when issues came back to bite him later. Her name is Emanuela but soon after she starts work, because she is always complaining about her various maladies, she acquires the nickname of Granny.

Now I am off to thank "carol" for her brave fight for Fawn, which spurned my discovery of this novel. In this brilliant sequel to The Diary of a Bookseller (2017), Bythell plays the misanthrope to perfection. That he then pays vast amounts for the books, along with the fuel costs, demonstrates his selfless admiration towards the book profession, which can hardly be extremely profitable. humorous, philosophical, personal, written by someone shaking his head at the eccentricities of his fellow human beings… an easy and entertaining read.

Fawn, the protagonist, has created alternate realities for herself and acts according to her imaginary self-image, behaviour which varies between being funny, cringeworthy, frustrating and sad at different times.Overall, Fawn is a unique character that will stay with me for a while, but then I'm rather fond of eccentric older female characters. I see where the author wanted to go and the message she wanted to convey, but it did not save this book.

No one is more surprised than me that I liked this book, having started it due to all the bad reviews!

I am generally intolerant of unsympathetic characters unless they are strong or interesting, and thankfully Fawn is both. Further, none of the anecdotes Fawn found herself in were all that amusing (to be frank, I honestly couldn’t believe she was running her own business) and I kept thinking that had this book been told in a different format, the storyline might have flowed a bit better and I might have enjoyed it more. only toward the end, after what should have been a personal tragedy , did she begin to see her childhood and her family in a different light. I ended up skipping through and although Fawn's character did show development and we learn more about her upbringing and why she is the way she is however it comes much too late at the end.
