In-between the shutter speed and exposure comp dials is a customizable Function button, which activates the camera's Wi-Fi feature by default. Above that is the power / shutter release button, which does not support a screw-in cable release, unlike the X-Pro1 and X-E2. But both the USB and mic ports accept electronic releases, and the camera is controllable from a smartphone over Wi-Fi, so you're not short of options in this area. The Fuji XT-1 is what a Japanese camera should be: tiny, tight, precise, fast, quiet, easy-to-use and extremely well made out of all metal. It's not another offshored-to-China excuse made out of plastic.

When PRE-AF is ON, the X-T1 is always trying to focus even if you're not touching it, but more importantly, now all my AFC shots actually are in focus. The Fujifilm X-T1 provides a modest ISO range of 200-6400, and while this might seem more limiting than some of the X-T1’s rivals, it can be expanded to the equivalent of ISO 12,800, 25,600 and 51,200 at the high end, and ISO 100 at the low end. You’ll want to bear in mind, however, that these expanded settings only allow images to be recorded as JPEGs, not as raw files.

With its focal-plane shutter, the X-T1 has a very adaptable top shutter-speed limit of 1/4000th second in all shooting modes. Consequently there's no built-in ND filter as on the X100/S, so if you want to use the 35mm lens at F/1.4 in very bright sunlight, for example, then it's a good idea to buy an actual glass ND filter. The X-T1 utilises a focal-plane shutter rather than the leaf shutter that the X100/S cameras have, much like a regular DSLR camera. This results in slightly noisier operation than on those very quiet cameras, although the shutter on the X-T1 is pretty stealthy by DSLR standards, and a much slower flash-sync speed of 1/180th second (versus the X100/S's 1/400th second). To make the camera less obtrusive there's a Silent menu option which turns off the speaker, flash, AF-assist lamp and most importantly the shutter-release sound, instantly making the X-T1 perfectly suited to candid photography.

As mentioned earlier, some users may want to take advantage of the film-simulation modes to boost saturation in relevant scenes. While talking to Fujifilm, its engineers stressed the ability of Provia mode to convey accurate skin tones, as well as the importance of Velvia mode for enriching the colour of landscapes. However it uses the 'Area' mode only, with the camera focusing wherever it thinks best within the scene: you can't choose a specific point. This means that even with a completely static subject, it will hunt to reconfirm focus every few seconds (and quite possibly refocus in the wrong place). One further quirk is that if Face Detection is enabled, then the camera will operate in continuous autofocus even when the focus mode switch is set to S-AF. There's a rear LED whose color tries to tell you things, but it's invisible when the camera is held to your eye. It does light in orange while the shutter is open for long exposures. The lens release button is hidden near the bottom of the lens on the grip side. This makes it harder to find instinctively, and also means that it's less likely some miscreant will steal your lens when you're distracted. With the addition of possibly the most impressive electronic viewfinder I’ve ever seen on a digital camera, fast AF, weather sealing and intuitively placed manual controls, it’s hard to be anything other than positive about the new Fujifilm X-T1.

Image Quality: Both cameras use Fujifilm’s X-Trans CMOS sensors, however, the Fujifilm uses the X-trans 2 sensor and the X-T5 uses the X-Trans 5 sensor.

The X-T1 has a dedicated movie button allowing video capture from any exposure mode. It's function can't be reassigned, even if you only ever shoot stills.

The X-T1 has marvelous automatic eye-control, so the rear LCD or electronic finder come up automatically depending on how you're holding the camera. The 1.04-million-dot reinforced LCD viewfinder can be tilted, which is a feature that won’t be popular with everyone but will make creative shooting options easier for those who choose to use it. Other FeaturesThere are some additions that could enhance the operation of the camera – a touchscreen being one – but all things considered, the X-T1 is one of the best (if not the best) premium compact system cameras tested by AP.
