Other parts of the illustrations have fun little extras like the names of some books or the name of a newspaper that made me laugh as its animal inspired. Uh-oh, here we go again… A hilarious romp of a book, with a fantastic read-aloud rhyming text and spectacular illustrations. A bunch of badly behaved rabbits are on a bus that zips madly through town, driven in a reckless (and dangerous) manner.

Errant buckets of paint left around a farm turn five sheep from white to red, yellow, blue, green, and purple. Again, Bird assures Squirrel that no one’s taking the leaves and that the same thing happened last year, then encourages Squirrel to relax. The only nonbunny passenger is a large newspaper-reading sheepdog in a tiny bowler hat, who seems unbothered by it all—until, that is, the bunnies break the ultimate bus law: no playing in the aisles.All in all, Bunnies on The Bus is brilliant fun with detail-filled illustrations and a bouncy rhythm to capture readers’ imaginations. The illustrator of Follow the Track All the Way Back by Timothy Knapman and many other picture books, he is also the author-illustrator of the Dinostars series as well as The Best Birthday Present Ever! The riotous illustrations—digitally manipulated pencil drawings—are brimming with action, colorful details, and rambunctious fun. Rather than seeing it as an unfortunate delay of their project, Renata and Papi decide to let the avian carpenters continue their work. Each part of the story has a great rhyme to it and there is even some repetition of phrases like ‘Bunnies on the Bus’.

It’s a lovely day in Sunny Town and all the animals are getting along, but then a bunch of bunnies takes over the bus and some crazy antics ensue. The only downside for me was I would have liked a bit more of a story but the book did work and the main target was happy with it! This is a hilarious children’s book – not so much for the words of the story (in nice rhyming couplets) but for the wonderful pictures. I also really like that this book invites children into the story to spend time looking at the illustrations while talking about the everything that they see.

There are lions, pandas, hedgehogs, pigs, bears, elephants, sheep, monkeys, cats, dogs, frogs, rhinos, hippos, sheep, chickens, a fox, a penguin and a giraffe – maybe more. Well illustrated and a funny adventure, that was too light for my personal taste, but still entertaining and with rhythmic and rimes in the writing to make it perfect for reading out loud.

Since 2008, Ben has been working as a Children’s Book Illustrator from his shared studio in Brighton and he also produces screen prints and digital artwork to exhibit. Although the story focuses on the bus and the bunnies on it, there is so much going on beyond the bus (as well as the action on the bus) that you can spend a really long time just staring at one page trying to spot all the fun details.Repetitive phrasing in the rhyming verses adds to the frenzied atmosphere that quickly ensues, the author’s British origins evident in some of the word choices: “Pandas at the crossing! The text suggests the strong bond built by this Afro-Latinx father and daughter with their ongoing project without needing to point it out explicitly, a light touch in a picture book full of delicate, well-drawn moments and precise wording. All about Philip As well as being an Ambassador for the Summer Reading Challenge, Philip Ardagh is also a Lifetime Ambassador for the Schools Library Group of CILIP (the librarians’ association), the Northern Children’s Book Festival, and for the Stratford-upon-Avon Literary Festival.
