Craig Wilson, only selects casks laid during Scottish winter months to create a golden, rich single malt whisky. I just couldn't bring myself to freeze the sample from Diageo and to be honest in my experience this only ever dulls the nose and flavour, it can be refreshing but personally I want the full unchilled flavour experience.

The new whisky takes its "Winter's Gold" name tag from the fact that it only contains whisky which was distilled during the cold Scottish winters months between October and April.The finish offers a soothing texture, as light floral notes mingle with soft fruits and just a touch of spice.

So does using only whisky that was distilled during the winter months make a difference to the final whisky I hear you ask?Broad, firm, smooth and clean, yet with a compelling, sweet, honeyed, dessert character that suggests the indulgence to come. Diageo have added a new No Age Statement whisky to its Dalwhinnie core range, named Dalwhinnie Winter's Gold, it will start appearing on shelves from this month. Ewan Mackintosh, the Dalwhinnie distillery manager, commented: "Distilled in the depths of winter at the highest distillery in the UK, Winter’s Gold honours the influence that the cold has on Dalwhinnie. Well I can say that the cold weather conditions at the Dalwhinnie distillery, which will be cold for most of the winter due it being the highest distillery in Scotland at at 326 metres above sea level will have an affect on the distilled spirits flavour during the condensing stage of production. Dalwhinnie Winter’s Gold is in the same vein as the 15 Year Old with aromas of flowers, honeyed with a hint of peat and green fruit – apples and fresh pear.

Served straight from the freezer, it was delicious: rich, oily, with just a perfect amount of sweetness balanced with a drier edge at the back of the palate.An award-winning whisky - recently received the accolade of the gold medal at the 2021 Scotch Whisky Masters. Growing spicy, with gingerbread; then denser with rich malt loaf, suggestions of molasses and mint; and later soft, distant smoke. An ever-present fragrant and smooth waxiness underscores higher glimpses of fruit, suggesting a caramel tart on a smear of sharp apricot coulis, or sweet shortcrust pastry offset by orange zest. I have heard whispers that Lagavulin and Cragganmore are next in line to have no age statement whiskies added to their core ranges. Unusually for an Islay single malt, Stiùireadair is unpeated, allowing the sweet coastal character of our island to shine through.
