Bugsnax is currently a timed exclusive for both PlayStation consoles and the Epic Games Store on PC. We don’t have confirmation of how long that timed agreement is, and the developer has not shared any official platform choices for afterward. However, by looking at their history we get a good idea of what they like to do. Follow every lead to learn more about Lizbert's band of misfits and the mysteries of Snaktooth Island. The investigative element of Bugsnax, much like the catching component, is a little here or there too, though it still hits more than it misses. Having landed on Bugsnax Island, you need to help Filbo find the missing residents, especially Elizabert Megafig, the island’s informal founder. As the narrative slowly unfolds, you realise that finding Elizabert is the biggest piece of puzzle pie, and you need the help of all the other Grumpuses to locate her. But on the other hand, there are more than a couple of forgettable designs. I’d need some serious prompting to recall the look of a Spuddy, or a Cheeser from name alone, and the third example you should have read there I simply forgot about entirely, both in terms of name and design. Still, every first generation has its hang-ups, just ask Jynx from Pokémon if you don’t believe me.

You can see this open-heartedness is a core tenet of the philosophy of Bugsnax, and it’s a real breath of fresh air to see not just heteronormative relationships in Snaxtown, but more progressive and true-to-life companionships, that don’t feel for one second like they’re virtue signalling, or trying desperately to appeal to a set demographic.

The number and variety of designs make it so that the odd disappointment is more than made up for by some of the favourites we mentioned before. Not only that, but regardless of their look, Bugsnax are fun to interact with, and there’s enough care to detail in their AI to give them both personality and an understanding of their habitat, so it really does feel like a wild excursion. See PlayStation.com/help for more details. When Bugsnax was first announced as a PS5 exclusive, I didn’t know much about it besides having to catch creatures of the same name. Sounds a bit familiar, doesn’t it? So, when it was announced that it was coming to Switch, I was interested to see if this was another type of Pokemon game with a puzzle-type mechanism for catching which would replace the more iconic battling method. Find out more. The one hiccup I have with this sort of gameplay loop, especially towards the latter part of the game, is that the missions set by the Grumpuses can get a little repetitive. While questing is good fun for the most part, I did start to develop a sense of fatigue concerning the “collect two of these Bugsnax” or “get the Bugsnak to do the thing” objectives that take up a decent chunk of the game’s missions. So, I went into the game not knowing what to expect, and I can wholeheartedly say that I had a glorious time. Grumpuses? I love ‘em. Bugsnax Island? Perfect holiday destination. Bugsnax themselves? Tasty. Can’t get enough. Everything is so inviting, with all the design elements coming together for a playful and charming game world that welcomes you with open arms. Still, it’s the questions that lurk underneath that keep you hanging around. Bugsnax performance on Switch is a mixed bag. It’s nice to see a team take a game that was designed for the PS5 and get it to run on the Switch, and for the most part it does outside of some long load times and occasional pop-in. The load times are generally an issue when first starting the game and loading into one of the areas or switch areas. The pop-in really doesn’t affect gameplay – it’s just noticeable as you walk around the environment and more because the game is played in first person. The first-person perspective controls and camera take a bit getting used to and don’t feel as tight and responsive as I would have preferred. For new players, Bugsnax is a first-person adventure game that sees you explore a colorful island full of the titular Bugsnax, helping the handful of grumpuses living on the island with both their personal stories as well as uncovering the larger secrets of what’s happen to the mysteriously disappeared explorer Elizabert Megafig, who invited you to Snaktooth Island in the first place.
