In the 20th century we entered a “century of science where many people wouldn’t understand anything and no one understand everything.If you burned this book now, its matter would be changed to ash and smoke, but the total amount of ‘stuff’ in the universe would be the same. You would be right, but what is 15 years when measured against, millenniums, or, actually, even millions of years. The "Grown-Ups" version is one of my favourite non-fiction books, so reading the children's version to my 6 and 8 year olds as bedtime reading was a no-brainer. This history of life, the universe and everything in between is entertaining and Bryson is an excellent guide. I highly recommend this as "bedtime reading" to anyone over six or seven but under twelve years of age; teens may find the information a bit too simple or uninteresting.

In this book, Bryson takes his vast knowledge and wealth of life experience, and condenses and simplifies it into language which is considerably more readable to children. It is a brilliant source of information, and if you are curious, you can use this book to answer many of your questions about science! I read the original book more than 10 years ago ( A Short History of Nearly Everything), since then I've praised it endlessly and often referred to it as one of my favorite books. Bryson also speaks about modern scientific views on human effects on the Earth's climate and livelihood of other species, and the magnitude of natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and the mass extinctions caused by some of these events.
