This film is a great example of having an idea, shaping that idea, watching it grow and change and ultimately become something truly unique and original. Serialized in Comic Garden magazine, Night of the Living Cat, written by Hawkman and illustratd by Mecha-Roots is a brand-new series that flips the zombie apocalypse on its head.

Nowadays, everyone sees films at Cannes and Sundance and believes that "Hey, Independent Film is just like Hollywood. Now, the last three Cat Girls left alive head for the only place they think they will be safe, a cabin in the middle of the Haunted Forest. In a real scenario, these cats would be gunned down and bombed to death quickly, but since everyone loves cats, the most they can do is use common cat-repelling tactics like spraying water, placing water bottles, spike strips, cat repellent ultrasound machines and so on. However, a new manga takes the zombie genre in a brave new direction by making the zombies into cats. The story follows a group of survivors in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by cats that have inexplicably turned into bloodthirsty monsters. With cats carrying a disease that will convert humans into new cats our main team of survivors narrowly escape their formally safe haven to find help and possibly security.

Not so here: the art is barely passable at its best, and at its worst, characters are off-model and scenes so muddy, you have to strain your eyes to tell what's going on. Rhymer probably worked very hard to make the original dialogue at least readable and probably that it was originally atrocious. With one of the cat loving survivors allergic to cats the sudden increase is terrible but thanks to her hyper sensitivity the group has a slightly better chance to avoid the fate of so many before them but in reality regardless of long they run how far can people run from the adorable doom coming their way. I like how there is so much effort to show cats not being harmed, like in the epic helicopter crash.Of course even with a to be continued at the end of the chapter I wonder how long this series will last. This traffic may have been sent by malicious software, a browser plug-in, or a script that sends automated requests.

In the spirit of Anime, video gaming, and even good old Horror films, (Come back to your roots, Sam Raimi. This, mixed with the dark, ruined locations they explore gives the series a very gritty atmosphere, to the point that the series often resembles manga from the mid to late '90s. Due to the way it's written and displayed, I can't feel any care for the mc or his team, the most that can happen is that they turn into cats like everyone else, at this point it doesn't feel like a big deal especially since they all love cats so much, so why bother? Mankind has been overwhelmed by the power of their fearsome floof, turning into cats one after another. The art style is delightfully retro, so readers who grew up with 90s manga will also get a big hit of nostalgia from Night of the Living Cat, further adding to the book's appeal.

This manga series continues to be a splendid spoof of Night of the Walking Dead with often times over dramatic characters who find themselves occasionally almost succumbing to the horde of feline overlords. I love cats and I love horror and this book certainly delivers on the first part (cats), but there's absolutely no horror here. Plus, long-time zombie fans will find plenty of references to classic zombie media, making Night of the Living Cat feel like a fantastic homage to the genre and its greatest creators. The art is inconsistent in some places (it looks very detailed and well-drawn on some pages and the proportions were off on the other pages) but all the cats are very well-drawn and super cute. The artwork is pretty solid, more of an old school manga style, the dialogue is really trite and cutesy.Night of the Living Cat is the perfect manga to read this Halloween, especially for those looking for a fun horror series that subverts the usual zombie tropes. The illustrations are incredibly detailed, capturing the horror and chaos of the world in which the story takes place. What we're instead left with is actions, seriousness, art and drama that's very similar to what you'd see in a zombie apocalypse flick, but what they're saying and doing in the end and what they're fighting with is the pure opposite of it. The story is even dumber than expected, and the translated dialogue by Nan Rhymer--a veteran translator--is almost as bad.
