As such seasoned readers may well be put off by the style of this book. It is not particularly welcoming, and you almost need to skim the words rather than trying to take them all in as individual sentences. Certainly if you try to read the book intricately it will become a struggle, because in all honesty it just doesn't flow that well from sentence to sentence. Then again this is something that should be expected and persevered with. If you want a literary masterpiece, don't buy the autobiography of a professional footballer. It would be hard on anyone's ego, and Gerrard has often been accused of egotism, because that's how people usually interpret his on-field persona. But if he really did have a giant ego, he would have left Liverpool for a stronger team years ago, instead of staying on and sacrificing his own chances of success to increase theirs.

I decided to read this book because I am huge football fan. I am reading a football book because I love the sport.There really are some great football biographies out there, to name a few I'd go with Paul Gascoigne's Gazza : My Story (which really is extraordinary with it's describtion of Gazza's trouble with alcohol and a struggle against a fragile psyche) or A Life Too Short: The Tragedy of Robert Enke (which is more of a story about a man battling [and losing to] depression in the macho-world of modern football). I also enjoyed Alex Ferguson's autobiography (and this comes from a diehard fan of Liverpool FC). The decent grammar and perfect spelling are illuminated by all those sad little yellow faces. I laughed a lot and cried a little. I'm not ashamed to admit this. This is what football can do. It can make grown men get really emotional. And a few players have the ability to enhance this even more. None more so than Steven Gerrard. With his talent and determination. His unbelievable goals. His leadership. It’s been while since I read the 2007 book, but my recollection of the difference can be summed up in contrasting anecdotes. The story about the garden fork and Gerrard’s toe in the first book was genuinely dramatic. The story in this book about Gerrard getting cut in a sensitive area away at Bournemouth and the playing the derby game with four stitches was overdone. Personally this book stood out for me for a number of reasons. The first is the stark contrast between the private nature of Steven Gerrard from day to day, and how revealing he is in this book. It would have been so easy for a footballer with this career up to this point to concentrate on the professional highs and lows, and not delve too much into the personal side of things. Indeed, taking this route must have been tempting for someone who works hard to keep himself out of the media limelight. As previously stated, Steven Gerrard released this book at the age of 26, which for footballers is only really middle age. Most professional footballers don't retire until their early thirties, and indeed the likes of Ryan Giggs (who is an iconic footballer in his own right, and still playing first team football for Manchester United at the age of 35) have shown that it is possible to go on longer than that at the highest level. Personally I felt that at the time of releasing this book Steven Gerrard had at least another five or six years left at the very top level of club football. As such, it was something of a disappoint that he released this book only two thirds of the way through what is, up to now, a glittering career. You can't help but feel at the end of this book (especially if you've read it recently) that a second book is likely at some point down the line.It's a fine insight into one of the most profilic and inspirational footballers in England over the last 20 years. The game was like a reverse It's a Wonderful Life – he'd seen what the world might be like if he wasn't around, and everyone was having the time of their lives. Narrated in the brutally honest tone of Liverpool's iconic captain, the book doesn't shy away from landing a few strong punches. Clearly, Gerrard couldn't care less about political correctness (especially at this stage in life).The highs in the books comes, when he describes the feelings and doubts that goes through his mind while he has his ups and downs throughout his career.
