Again, it’s something that allows him to stay in and stay creative. “I love that you’re not putting on a big show, you just go live and talk about whatever comes to mind,” he says. “That’s my social life.” Limmy joined YouTube on March 28, 2008, and uploaded his first video the following day. His earliest videos were largely short comedy skits and vlogs or showcasing musical remixes he had made using the program Ableton Live. Limmy gives us a frank insight into some of his history and the coinciding battles and experiences with his mental health. Some of it is quite scary to hear but it is always dashed with some dark humour in the traditional Limmy way. it's definitely a very interesting read and I certainly recommend the audiobook version of not just this book but all of his previous books - It always adds a extra level of depth to hear him speak the words, and he's brilliant at it.Which brings us to his autobiography. Titled Surprisingly Down to Earth and Very Funny (a reference to a running online joke, in which the 44-year-old tweets the same faux obituary each time a public figure dies), the book chronicles his early days growing up on a council estate on the south side of Glasgow (“It was maybe a wee bit rough”), following him all the way through to “getting on the telly”. It’s an unflinchingly honest account, which sees him talk openly about his experiences with anxiety, alcoholism, suicidal thoughts and sex. While it’s written with the offbeat irreverence that characterises his work, the subject matter is often heavy. He said: “When I went to the doctor for depression and anxiety, he gave me Prozac right away. There was no talk of a counsellor to know whether I was in the right frame of mind to take these things. After continuing his comedy work for several years, Limmy was commissioned by BBC Scotland to create his own sketch show, Limmy's Show. The show ran for three series and a Christmas special between 2010 and 2013 and won two BAFTA Scotland awards. Limmy has also engaged in various other pursuits, such as writing several books and performing explicit live shows. The deep function of laughter is apparently that it allows play / boundary learning / questioning social norms. So to be a comedian, you have be a step past your society.
