What to know

In general I don't particularly enjoy graphic novels, but this is a story I admire. However, I feel that the book doesn't quite capture the devastatingly potent psychological effect Tom’s heroic act of violence has on him and his family members as well as the film does. Indeed, there is surely a doctoral thesis to be written on the subject, a basic outline of which I provided in my original Violence review (written for Jigsaw Lounge in September 2005) in which I compared the film versions of the two novels (Sam Mendes' Road to Perdition was released in 2002): "both are adaptations of graphic novels featuring Irish-American gangsters, tracing the way violence impacts upon the male psyche and informs father-son relationships. But whereas Mendes became bogged down in picturesque sentimentality as his movie sprawled beyond the two-hour mark, Cronenberg's approach [running time: 96 minutes] is one of cool, crystalline efficiency."
