Working with fish multifilament nets present special problems for disinfection due to the weave. This has been shown to require special efforts, as fish mucus has a way of entering the weave of the net as it moves under the weight of the fish. This can take pathogens with it and then they can be effectively hidden from disinfection. We suggest after use they be dropped into a tank and left overnight in a combination of Ark-Klens and Virkon Aquatic. Virkon Aquatic contains tensides to help the disinfectant penetrate but the special problems of nets bear extra effort. This mixture should be rinsed off before nets are used. Where two folds of skin rub together, chafing can occur, leading to a sore inflamed area of skin. This particularly happens in places such as the groin or under the breasts where frequent sweating occurs. This combination of irritated skin and wetness is called intertrigo. The same condition happens under babies’ nappies and is known as nappy rash. In both intertrigo and nappy rash the inflamed skin is easily infected by germs, in particular a fungus called Candida albicans. Timodine Cream is specially formulated to ease the soreness and treat the infections in intertrigo and inflamed nappy rash. If you are using Timodine Cream for nappy rash make sure you speak to your doctor about how you should use the cream. Nappies can make it easier for the ingredients of the cream to pass through the skin and it is possible to accidentally end up using too much cream.

Fish have a body temperature which essentially mirrors that of the environment and the temperature at which they would be expected to freeze and die would be the freezing point of their blood plasma. They have been shown to be able to resist this by 1oC in ways not really understood except in the presence of ice formation. The presence of ice appears to encourage the formation of ice crystals in the skin and circulation, resulting in death. Timodine Cream contains four different medicines called nystatin, hydrocortisone, dimeticone and benzalkonium chloride. Ice crystal formation in tissues rips cells apart, this will be especially acute in gills which have extremely cold water possibly with forming ice crystals in it being pumped across them all the time. Tamodine is suitable for cleaning mouth rot lesions in the mouths of reptiles. These are likely also to need antibiotic treatment from a Veterinary Surgeon.

Even if you don't use it as a routine (which you should), use ACE–HIGH (to enhance levels of "stress alleviating" vitamins) in the Autumn. Timodine Cream is used to treat inflamed skin conditions, particularly where the fungal infection Candida albicans can occur. Change 25-50% of the water in spring, from the bottom, to remove mulm, Use ACE-High in the Spring to top-up levels of vitamins that have been depleted over the winter. Koi become fairly dormant at about 4-5oC (~40oF). You should not feed as temperatures are falling towards this region. Koi do not feed much below 10oC (50oF). Above 12oC they can be fed two or three times a day. If there is a worsening of your condition during use consult your prescriber – you may be experiencing an allergic reaction, have an infection or your condition requires a different treatment. If you experience a recurrence of your condition shortly after stopping treatment, within 2 weeks, do not restart using the cream without consulting your prescriber unless your prescriber has previously advised you to do so. If your condition has resolved and on recurrence the redness extends beyond the initial treatment area and you experience a burning sensation, please seek medical advice before restarting treatment.

Thinning of the skin is more likely to occur if the cream is used under dressings Carp are by nature a warmwater fish. However they are extremely tolerant and will overwinter perfectly well in unheated ponds. EFSA (2008) suggests that carp will tolerate down to 2oC - actually they will go lower but some will die through stress or superchill. Hydrocortisone is a mild corticosteroid (or steroid) which fights the inflammation that causes redness, swelling and itchiness
