Crafted for durability and portability, it includes features like a 24H Timer, Lifetime technical support, and a 2-year limited warranty. But as there are so many different models on the market, it can be difficult to decide which is the best one for your needs. They washed a full load of clothes (weighing between 3 to 4kg), then weighed them when wet before hanging them up to dry next to the dehumidifier. We tested each dehumidifier for at least three days and kept an eye on energy costs, how noisy it was and how well it performed.

The Hangsun DL12 uses compressor dehumidification technology, so not only does it perform very well at reducing critical humidity levels, but it also has an automatic defrost condenser, is quiet and uses 25-60% less energy than other units. Plus, there’s an automatic switch-off function, so there’s no need to worry if you leave it running when you’re not around.

It isn’t a light machine, weighing around 15kg, but it does have castors, so pushing it from room to room isn’t an issue. We tested a range of dehumidifiers by letting them run continuously in different spaces and under different conditions, such as with laundry drying or while cooking. Despite its small size, it can collect up to 500ml of water – ideal for small spaces, such as kitchens, bathrooms or even in damp spots such as under the stairs.

Plus, this figure often refers to the maximum amount of water an appliance can extract rather than what it will extract in a UK home in winter. While it’s not the fanciest design on the market, this dehumidifier has plenty of great features including a built-in humidity sensor, a laundry mode, three fan settings, and auto shut-off when the water tank is full, which meant it scored well across the board.

In terms of the material quality, it's solid plastic, so you can either use the container at the back where it collects the water (most convenient) or use it with a hose pipe (supplied). The tank capacity should match up to the space you’re using it in, and the scale of the damp you’re dealing with. I have used this dehumidifier for a few months now and it has done a brilliant job of lowering the humidity in my cellar from 90% to around 70% which has stopped the mould growth. The LCD control panel makes the dehumidifier really easy to use – you simply select the right setting for your space, including the humidity levels, and away you go.

Dehumidifiers draw excess moisture out of the air so they can help dry clothes and are cheaper to run than a tumble dryer.

Testers found it straightforward to use, easily adjusting the speed and settings from their smartphones.

It’s so quiet, that you don’t hear it running – ideal if you want to it on overnight without having your sleep disturbed.

Exactly how much electricity a dehumidifier will use will depend on the model but, generally speaking, they’re energy-efficient appliances that use very little electricity, particularly when compared with some other home appliances. Plus, it’s very economical, as it has a hydrophilic coating that can collect up to 40 per cent more water without using any extra power. It does have an option for continuous draining, but just note that it doesn’t come with a water tube (this needs to be purchased separately).
