But every now and then, you find an excellent pair of studio headphones that doesn’t cost too much and sounds great. For unamplified use I find the 770s a better match with their 80 Ohm impedance (they certainly work well with most Roberts radios of recent years, Roberts seem to have pretty good headphone circuits on their radios). With that being said, I love the by some considered sharp highs of the dt-990's, everything sounds crystal clear, not "muddy" or "washed out".

The former because footsteps and little sounds that are easy to miss are much easier to hear with these ranges of emphasis, and the latter because mixing with these ranges boosted will lead to less-grating mixes if left unequalized. At the next local meet, a guy was raving about his DT-990s, so I thought they had to have fixed what was wrong with the DT880s.

As regards comparison with the Grado SR 80s, the 990s and 880s are decidedly superior sounding, with the Grados sounding rather rough and uncouth by comparison (though this isn’t helped by the Grados comfort levels which are simply not in the same league - half an hour with Grado SR80 ear pads is sheer torture; consequently I’ve replaced them with Sennheiser HD414 ear pads which improbably (as, apart from being yellow, they don’t seem materially that different from the Grado pads) improve matters a fair bit and don’t noticeably change the SR80s sound).I have these and they're my "I need audio at my computer and don't feel like wearing Audeze" headphones. However, I’ve had quite a lot of trouble using these headphones while on the road, connected to my phone or laptop, as I could never quite get enough volume, especially on public transport. The impedance is comparatively high at 250 ohms, but nothing stands in the way of reasonable playback volume on mobile devices.

The DT 990 Pro is characterised by good spatial sound reproduction and offers a stereo stage to the listener that allows precise localisation of individual mixing components. Thanks to the padded spring steel frame construction with adjustable contact pressure, the light grey velour ear pads fit perfectly. One further point, on comfort, although the 990s have more clamping force on the head, I actually find them more comfortable than the Amirons as they fit my head better. The DT 990 does have a better mechanicle noise canceling, meaning it's stopping the outside noices due it's speakers casing. The caveat however is that if you pair them with a simple amplifier you will unleash the beast <1KHz.The dynamic DT 990 Pro, designed for the use in studios, has excellent stereo reproduction and a pleasant sound. With the DT 900 PRO X, you get a mini-XLR input and an easy-to-repair design—which solves some of the biggest issues of the cheaper DT 990 PRO. But for the usability I'd give them 4 instead of 5 — such type of spring-like cable always messing between you and your monitor out. But if you want realistic uncoloured and natural sounding headphones then look at these further perhaps? The feedback response given is so flat that I now mix to these and mixes seem a bit louder on my monitors.
