Rated R (2000), Songs for the Deaf (2002), Lullabies to Paralyze (2005) and Era Vulgaris (2007) are the albums in question, and all are pressed on black vinyl. The engineer Eric Valentine credited Grohl for his patience in the process, which he described as "very difficult". This pressing is absolutely amazing; the mixing is lovely and being on vinyl does Songs For The Deaf so great. I invite you to imbibe with your favorite substance as you work your way through all four sides of this one. Songs for the Deaf is a gatefold 2LP set and also includes an insert, this time a 12″ x 12″ square one. And there are even better moments to be had elsewhere: the wavering surf guitar on "Another Love Song", or the good old-fashioned brain-sickness of "Six Shooter" and "Mosquito Song," the latter played lovingly by what sounds like the orchestra of the damned. Songs for the Deaf is a loose concept album, taking the listener on a drive through the California desert from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree, tuning into radio stations from towns along the way such as Banning and Chino Hills.Song for the Deaf" and "Go with the Flow" were previously performed as early as 2001 with the former having very different lyrics and vocals completely by Mark Lanegan. All of the interior artwork for each of the three versions is the same, but there were covers printed in red, magenta, and orange.
