Early story notes for the movie state that Galvatron is " a deadlier version of Megatron. Less bluster, more ruthless action". Further, in an early draft of the script, Galvatron reveals his "true" name—Megatron—to Hot Rod at the film's climax, with the implication that Megatron has merely been playing along with Ingestor's (the early version of Unicron) plans and has only pretended to be his willing servant, while in fact retaining his original identity and plans for conquest. The final version of the film leaves this a bit more ambiguous. Although, as noted, it seems fairly clear in the film that Megatron is playing the role of "Galvatron" that has been imposed upon him (even for his own troops) until such time as he can betray Unicron. If Ironhide, Brawn and Grapple attempted to snatch the ship away from Galvatron, the Decepticons destroyed both the ship and the sphere within to prevent it from falling into Autobot hands. Galvatron now knew that the Autobots were hidden away in nearby caves, and had his Decepticons use their superior firepower to pin them down, leaving them at his mercy. They found him sunk in a lava pit on the distant planet Thrull and managed to free him. However, the effects of the "plasma bath" irrevocably altered Galvatron's sanity chips, rendering him omnicidally insane. In another scenario, Galvatron remotely captured both Hot Rod and Bumblebee, and planned to use the pair as hostages to insure that Ultra Magnus would not interfere in his plan. Curiously, Galvatron's toy tech specs list his firepower at 9, as compared to Megatron's ranking of 10. This seems odd given that Megatron never showed any ability to perform single-shot disintegrations of traitorous schemers like Starscream. Some Marvel Comic bio material suggested Galvatron had nearly limitless power through Unicron. Even without this boost, however, he was still able to blow Cyclonus practically in half when possessed by Starscream's ghost. In an alternate scenario, Galvatron and the other Decepticons decided to take off into space in Sarah Sanders's ship after acquiring the Invisibility Device. Whether the Decepticons succeeded in mastering the Invisibility Device and subsequently destroyed the Autobots, or were destroyed or defeated themselves depended on what choices the Autobots made from this point on. Even when focusing strictly on Galvatron's most well-known incarnation — the G1 animated series — there has been considerable debate through the years. Some fans believe Galvatron is a psychologically distinct and discontinuous entity from Megatron, almost, or equally, as much as Scourge and Cyclonus, who demonstrate no continuity of memory or personality with their former Decepticon selves. This remains a topic of heated debate in some circles, in spite of a fairly unambiguous canon.

Optimus remembered Galvatron as one of the many threats the Autobots had overcome upon being met by Jhiaxus and his Cybertronian Empire. War Without End! Classics The promotional images for this figure depict a different sculpt for the crown-mask. This tooling lasted late enough in the development process that it surfaced on some prototypes. According to John Warden, the mold included a pretooled alternate head which was "an animated Galvatron", and a toy-based silver version of the figure had been conceptualised, but neither of these possibilities were followed through on. [1] Galvatron was retooled into Generations Selects Super Megatron. This toy has many undocumented features in the form of small moving parts that play no role in either mode; most conspicuous are two articulated feet for the tank mode. In one of the Hasbro Q&A sessions, it was confirmed that these are remnants of an early design version of Galvatron, which would have been at a larger size class and featured a third mode as a "walking tank." It is still possible to manipulate his parts into a mode greatly resembling the original concept design. In one possible outcome, Galvatron's plot proceeded forth without any Autobot interruptions, and the Decepticon gained an upper hand in their war with the Autobots that would most assuredly grant them total victory.

After Cyclonus secured the Nega-Core and activated its guardian, Galvatron initiated the Expansion with Nemesis Prime and the rest of the Dead Universe crew. Spotlight: Cyclonus Galvatron is paired with Cyclonus to patrol the Benzuli Expanse, charged with destroying anything that might interrupt the Expansion, and happily lets his partner take on Cloudburst and his crew. Spotlight: Doubledealer The e-HOBBY exclusive Galvatron sports the physically retooled parts of the 2006 Galvatron reissue—a screeching face and new electronics (a laser noise, the transformation sound effect and five phrases spoken by Seizō Katō) that operate on two AA batteries rather than a 9-cell—but with the gray paint scheme of the original 1986 toy. The die-cast metal Matrix accessory that the Galvatron reissue came with (itself a redeco of the accessory from New Year Special Convoy) is recolored in metallic green in the style of the comics' Creation Matrix.

In 2007, Galvatron called off the truce and led an assault on Autobot City, searching for the Key to the Plasma Energy Chamber. Although seemingly lucid during this period, he formulated what was perhaps his most genocidal and unbalanced scheme ever: Having converted Cybertron into a galactic dreadnought, Galvatron maneuvered it into Earth's orbit, planning to release the Plasma Energy Chamber's payload into Earth's sun, Sol. The resulting supernova would wipe both Earth and Cybertron off the face of the galaxy, presumably leaving Galvatron to gain mastery over everything left. Grudgingly teamed with the Transformer- Nebulan hybrid Lord Zarak, Galvatron was eventually defeated and sent tumbling through space, ushering Cybertron into a new Golden Age. The Rebirth, Part 1 Accessories: Laser Rifle, Particle Cannon, Particle Cannon connector, Matrix of Leadership w/ chainUpon touching the Energon Cube, Optimus Prime, Bumblebee and Wataru were shown a vision of Galvatron. Optimus wondered if he was seeing Cybertron's history, unaware that it was a premonition of the future. Kingdom of Giants After a nearly endless war that resulted in the AllSpark parting from Cybertron for good, Kingdom episode 1 Megatron killed Optimus Prime, lamenting that they should have worked together. Afraid of the possibility of this occurring in the past, Unicron enslaved and reformatted Megatron into a life of servitude as Galvatron. Megatron's reformatting was recorded at the end of the Voyager Golden Disk, which Megatron used to record his every action during the Great War. Kingdom episode 5 As the Autobots and Decepticons died out, Unicron and his minions were a constant threat to the Maximals and Predacons that emerged from the uninhabitable Cybertron. Kingdom episode 6 The arrival of a team of Autobot Headmasters repelled the invasion, but it was then revealed that the Matrix was hidden somewhere on Earth, recharging, and the race began to acquire it and use it to gain control over Vector Sigma. The Mystery of Planet Master In 2010, a set of Galvatron's original color models from The Transformers: The Movie went up for sale on Heritage Auctions, sold from Ron Friedman's collection of Sunbow Productions materials. This model depicted Galvatron with his earlier, more Megatron-ish head design, and showed his cannon as being grey in color. Galvatron's toy bio was apparently written with the intention of him being a new character who coexisted with Megatron; he has a rank of 9 and the function "City Commander," with no mention of him having once been Megatron. Given the omission of similar details from Rodimus Prime's bio, it is likely that this was done to avoid spoiling the surprise of Galvatron's origin in the movie.

The Galvatron toy's gun mode's only fictional appearances were in the UK comics, which featured it as a shrunken, human-scaled weapon, and a form that he assumed merely so that he could easily be conveyed by other parties, but never wielded as a weapon. It was also referenced in Dreamwave's More Than Meets the Eye profile of Galvatron, which Cyclonus describes as a weapon "none are worthy to wield."The Autobots and Megatron weren't having any of that and briefly formed an alliance to stop the three Decepticons of the future. Present-day Ultra Magnus also arrived to help and heroically kept Galvatron occupied as the future Autobots set-up a trap. By one account, Galvatron died on Cybertron circa 2035 after a final battle with Optimus Prime. Dawn of the Predacus Others say he was defeated by four Autobot warriors and buried under ice on Earth, while according to some he was pulled into another universe by Unicron.
