I believe that, in general, the book manages to portray in a proper way the misfortunes, problems, and barriers that we have in the current job market, especially when it comes to young women, bringing very valuable and pertinent reflections on how to deal with these issues and validating feelings that often seem to be wrong, isolated and insignificant because they are not debated in an open and welcoming way in most spaces. I did really enjoy the fist half and the encouraging positive message for women, but I couldn't maintain that interest for the duration of the book.

Maybe it's my fault for reading so many books about lost 20-somethings (don't read into this too much) but this book felt like it had been done so. it explores the burnout that comes with working tirelessly towards your dream job, sometimes up to the point when it ceases to even be a dream anymore, along with the inherent privilege surrounding the notion of a ‘dream job’. You can decide to think more about Imogen’s relationship (or lack of one) with her family, or you can just think that a passing comment is just that, a passing comment. A love story about work, self-worth and modern womanhood, Careering is, quite simply, the funniest novel I’ve read all year.It was a fun story arch with an interesting theme throughout that echoes the debate of women empowerment and what is it to be a women, and fuck anyone who disagrees. As she did with sex in her first novel, Insatiable, now Daisy Buchanan holds up a mirror to the changing way we work in the raw and relatable Careering .

With the events of the last two years making many question what really matters in life, Buchanan leaves you with the reminder that whether you love or loathe your job, it doesn't define who you are or put a value on your self-worth. The author also does a masterful job of slightly highlighting prejudice and racism in the publishing world without making it her own story (the author is a white woman). I found this book super fun, engaging, and almost inspiring in reminding you to pursue your dreams and be yourself in a world of absurd chaos.

Buchanan does an amazing job at bringing this all to light within this Novel, but the quick POV changes were at times a little confusing and make some of the narrative jumpy, but this is a fast read! Careering will strike such a chord with anyone who has ever walked to a job interview in trainers with a tote bag containing heels over their shoulder, feeling like an imposter. Blisteringly funny and painfully perceptive, with a warmth that radiates off the page, this book will speak straight to the heart of anyone who has ever felt like their own career is playing hard-to-get. That, and the fact that the story seems to take place in an alternate universe where basic common sense is… not a thing.Daisy has that magic gift, of capturing the nuance and detail of a very specific world in such a way that it feels universally, eternally relatable.
