Things going wrong add to the a reader's excitement, all while an environmental string weaves through the story - The ocean environment has been spoiled for financial gain of a few. Loving the sprayed edge ♥️ - it’s certainly one that if you like the sound of the plot (or know a kid who does! Anil was also fab as the third member of the team, trying to fit in to the group despite Zoey's resistance, and I loved his firm belief in himself.

The sea creatures near Haven Bay are acting very strangely, attacking boats, and Alex senses some dark power is controlling them. In each book, we see him embark on a new adventure with his found family, made up of his tech-genius best friend Zoey, legend-lover Anil, a sharp-shooting octopus, four acrobatic otters and a thieving seagull. The otters were just adorable, the thieving seagull was very amusing, and Kraken the blue octopus was just wonderful!

Some of the banter veers into childishness, but given that the characters are that particular age, it is more than appropriate. Another thing was that in quite a few places the grammar wasn't quite up to speed where a wrong word was used, jarring the sentence and flow of the paragraph or speech. There’s also purple foiling on the cover of all editions 💜 and the both the internal illustrations and cover were by George Ermos – and I can’t believe I missed the map until I was looking for the illustrator name! This is a great story and message for children cleverly mixed together in a funny and interesting way! The follow-up to former Waterstones Children's Book of the Month Alex Neptune, Dragon Thief finds our plucky hero and his friends determined to discover the water dragon's missing egg before a shipful of marauding pirates can lay their hands on it. It has always seemed that the ocean has been wanting to kill Alex - he, therefore prefers to keep his distance. She's just so full of attitude and opinion, and was a joy to read about, especially her art versus technology conflicts with her father. They must stop the Mayor, clean the water, prove that the age-old myths are true and save their town.

Although the story does have eco themes it isn’t at all heavy handed and the heist takes centre stage. Also the dialogue between the two during the climax was laughably bad, Like c'mon David I know you can do better than that. First of all I have been following David’s work for years and I am so happy that he has tried his hand at children’s/MG as well as YA - and that this book looks to be blowing up in a good way!
