The best route for hill walkers is to start at Ambleside or Rydal and ascend Nab Scar, Heron Pike and Great Rigg to reach the summit of Fairfield. In this book you’ll find 64 routes that, if you complete them all, by default you will also have completed the Wainwrights. A few of the summits are featured in more than one walk. That’s ok. The Godfather of the Lake District, Albert Wainwright, mapped, documented and published a staggering 214 fells, of varying lengths and climbs, with descriptions so delicately written, you’d think he were a poet. Another reason is that many walkers struggle to devise full-day walks using the Wainwright guide books. Yes, he has detailed pretty much every conceivable way of getting to each individual summit, but this leaves the reader having to then come up with their own plan to make a longer day of it by continuing over one or more other fells. Wainwright didn’t describe day walks in these seven guidebooks.

Eric Robson, Chairman of the Wainwright Society, writes that when making a TV programme on Scafell Pike, he was asked to carry out a risk assessment. “Dangerous,” he wrote on the form. “If wet or windy, bloody dangerous.” In 2014, it was agreed that the Society should however embark on a project to acquire a copy of every one of AW’s published items, the purpose of which was to try to ensure that a copy of his work was available for the future. We were not interested in which edition or impression was involved although the aim was to acquire a copy which was un-amended from his original publication. Publications ‘about AW’ were not included. However, where there was other material to which he had contributed in some way (e.g. a foreword, an introduction, or the inclusion of drawings which had not been reproduced in his other publications) we included these in our project. The intention was to donate the collection to the Cumbria Archive where it could be inspected and also used for research work. We could have chosen 10 more Wainwright Lake District walks, but these are a good starting point. There’s something for every ability, every type of walker.
