The choice of air bike will usually fall between the Airdyne or Assault Bike, whilst for a rower most will choose either the Concept 2 or a water rower.

The rower is easy to move around, whereas the SkiErg might need to be fixed to a wall for stability.It’s low impact. There’s no jumping or running involved with using the Concept 2 skier, making it a joint-friendly workout. Bringing the intense sport of Nordic skiing into gyms everywhere, the Concept2 SkiErg has proven itself to be one of the world’s best-selling ski machines in a relatively short space of time. Ski 1 minute hard, 1 minute easy for a total of 20 minutes. Watch the central display for your pace. Aim for a cadence of 39–45 spm. Record your pace after the workout using the recall/memory function on the Performance Monitor.

SkiErg machines are one of the lesser-known cardio machines than, say, treadmills or rowing machines, but that’s not to say they’re any less reputable. The reason you may not have heard of a SkiErg is probably because the first one only launched in 2009. For context, the first treadmill was invented in 1952, giving it a 57-year head start. What’s more, SkiErgs were initially only intended for Nordic cross-country skiiers to train when they didn’t have access to a mountain/snow (SkiErg machines mimic the exact same movement used in Nordic skiing, which we’ll explain in a mo). We do not have any improvements that we would like to see, however, there are some things Concept 2 could add that would take the SkiErg to another level. It trains both strength and endurance. The flywheel provides varying levels of resistance – the harder you pull, the stronger the resistance. The ski erg also gets your heart pumping and burns many calories (up to 250 in 30 minutes). You get a workout that makes you stronger and improves your cardio simultaneously. The Concept 2 SkiErg can be good for beginners. As mentioned earlier, it’s low impact, so beginners don’t have to worry about placing a lot of stress on their joints. Concept 2 provides tutorials and beginner workout plans to help you get started.

It should be noted that the star-driver that came with the box was Concept 2 branded, something small, but goes to show the lengths Concept 2 takes on attention to detail. Given that they’re two different machines that operate in different ways, it perhaps doesn’t seem fair to compare the SkiErg versus the Concept 2 rower-like-for-like in terms of size, but that doesn’t mean that their dimensions don’t matter. The SkiErg is incredibly space efficient

For most people, 300-500 calories will be burned in 30-45 minutes of rowing. Aim for 4 sessions per week of this length and you’ll help yourself lose weight. Which machine takes more Space?Yes, it provides a full body workout. The Concept2 SkiErg helps you build strength and endurance by working the entire body in an efficient, rhythmic motion. Is the Ski ERG Cardio? At the end of the rep, the triceps complete the extension of the arm at the elbows. There’s not a huge amount of arm musculature involved because the arms are relatively straight throughout the movement compared to rowing. Muscles used for Rowing It’s important to remember that both of these machines are fantastic pieces of gym equipment and I would recommend having at least one of them in your routine. But, if it comes down to one or the other, here are some things I would think about. Of course, you can make the workout very high intensity with a big leg drive and a hard pull, or you can slow it down with a long, strong, pull. Use of proper rowing technique makes for a very efficient stroke, which will allow a good rower to use the machine for a long time without being exhausted. Ski Erg Each set should be scaled so it does not exceed 12 minutes, putting the time cap on this workout at 60 minutes. For a class setting, participants could start on different ergs and work for up to 8 minutes.

Assembling the Concept 2 SkiErg is easy but requires two phases: putting the machine together and attaching it to the floor stand. On the plus side, the Rower offers a few more beginner-friendly settings than the SkiErg, which may make it a much better option for newcomers. Still, on the other hand, a significant portion of existing users also report that the Rower’s seat can be somewhat uncomfortable. Frequently Asked Questions About the Concept 2 Rower and SkiERG Machines Does the SkiERG build muscle?Once you get on the Model E rowing machine, you feel secure and stable. The machine feels sturdy and capable of delivering a solid workout. This is reaffirmed once you start rowing. The motion of the flywheel is consistently smooth. If you were to burn 1000 calories running, you’d have huge impact forces through your body and the recovery would take a lot longer. You could easily perform 3-5 rowing workouts per week, burning thousands of calories per week. That is very effective for weight loss.
