The details are salient and feel real, but a lot of the bigger context is missing; possibly purposely since Sattouf himself wouldn't have had context beyond snippets of news and overheard adult conversation at the time.

That being said, there are horrifying moments of violence and loss of innocence that stick with you. While all of the volumes of L’Arabe du futur are personal, book 6 shows the author at his most vulnerable.And hold they do, though food is scarce, children kill dogs for sport, and with locks banned, the Sattoufs come home one day to discover another family occupying their apartment. Every volume of this autobiographical bande dessinée has been a bestseller in France and translated into over 20 languages. He’s an equal-opportunity satirist and claims that he is racist or has a pro-west agenda don’t ring true. The reader easily shuttles back and forth between naïve and knowing perspectives, the two combined in the space of a frame.
