Eventually they turn to the suitcase Warren brought with him, which is full of his antique toys. She asks his favorite item, and he says it's his Wrigley Field Opening Day baseball cap that was given to him by his grandfather. He reminisces about his grandfather, and the discussion turns to his extended family, including his sister who was murdered. Things grow awkward again, so they begin dancing. This leads to kissing, and the pair decide to go rent a hotel room rather than wait for Dennis and Valerie.

I really liked this! It only deepened my want to watch it. So if anyone has found a full recording, please, I beg of you. Daniel, the twentysomething narrator of Lonergan’s second play, “The Waverly Gallery” (2000)—which was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize and is, in many ways, his archetypal stage work—is as hard of hearing emotionally as his grandmother, Gladys, is physically. The play is set in the West Village, partly in the house that Gladys, the child of Russian Jewish immigrants, bought with her husband, in the nineteen-forties. At the start of the two-act piece, it’s 1989 and Gladys is in her eighties. She lives in one apartment in her building, while Daniel, who works for the Environmental Protection Agency, lives in another. Gladys’s body and mind are failing, but she still enjoys certain pleasures, chief among them the small art gallery she’s run for years. Daniel tells the audience that most of the art Gladys exhibits isn’t very good, but what he doesn’t say or realize is that Gladys, an old Commie, is interested in artists and the act of creation; she’s determined to maintain her emotional availability and curiosity, even as her memory dims and various prejudices replace her former freedom of thought. Gladys’s most vocal critic is her daughter, Daniel’s mother, Ellen, a psychoanalyst who lives uptown with her second husband, Howard. (He’s a shrink, too.) Ellen complains about Gladys’s faulty memory, her deafness, and her habit of repeating stories, but you get the sense that she is rather proud of her own whiny stoicism; it’s of a piece with her poker-faced martyrdom. I don’t really get what you’re upset about. I thought we had a really good time together and I was actually in a fairly Up state of mind for once. I found all of the themes, major and minor, really interesting. Especially towards the end when things started to come together.

As Warren, Cera uses his inherent awkwardness to his advantage, and makes great asset of being the millennials’ apparent answer to Dorian Gray. Playing another teen who has not yet lived, but is already is world weary, Cera brings an arch sincerity and apprehension to a character who is so angry that he has forgotten how to rage. This is Cera’s third production in the play, and his comfort with this eternally uncomfortable material makes for riveting agony on stage. Culkin, meanwhile, threatens to steal the show with the constant alpha male showmanship of Dennis.

As a result, the focus in Laurence Boswell's production is very much on the performances. Hayden Christensen, looking like a taller Martin Amis, exhibits a fine rangy sulkiness as Dennis. Jake Gyllenhaal as Warren is naturally comic and engagingly defenceless. And Anna Paquin as Jessica combines prim formality of speech with an argumentative sexual ardour. All three are highly talented, instantly beguiling young actors even if Lonergan's study of subsidised social rebels leaves you wanting more.
