Description

When a player advances Bilbo onto a space that depicts the Ring, the player places the Ring token in front of him and must decrease the purple Cunning marker on his Character board by one space. Whilst we will do everything we can to meet the delivery times above, there may be factors outside of our control and we cannot guarantee delivery within this time frame. Next, the player with the "10" card moves Bilbo one space, receiving two provision tokens. Next, the player with the "22" card moves Bilbo one space and receives two Initiative, and finally the player with the highest card, "35", moves Bilbo one space and loses one Strength.

A Bilbo figure is used to travel over the small circles and will move based on the number of players, it is here that the competitive side of the game can really shine. Players will be competing to gain advantages that are labelled on the board, while also avoiding the disadvantages that also appear. In this phase players will use their dwarf cards to determine who takes priority, the lowest card will move Bilbo first then the next card and so on and this will allow the owner of the card to gain or lose the rewards based on the board. Journey Phase This is to encourage all participants on the long journey to make sure they achieved a good balance!

The Hobbit: Over Hill & Under Hill is the first Saga expansion for the LotR LCG. Saga expansions allows you to play scenarios adapted directly from the narrative told by Tolkien. In Over Hill & Under Hill you will find three scenarios based on the first half of The Hobbit. These scenarios can be played individually, or linked together, to form a campaign. All of you have two simple goals: get the most treasure and do not let the dragon Smaug reach Laketown, whereas the latter is a cooperative goal you must all make sure doesn’t happen. The former is a goal you compete against each other in to become the victor of the game. These two goals create a nice blend of you and your friends needing to try to make sure that Smaug never reaches Laketown whilst also securing your victory with more gold than your friends. The game is split into two phases which represent the way the board is laid out with 6 giant circles showing key milestones of the journey from the book and between them a number of small circles each containing a symbol that will have an impact on players. The rules for the Hobbit Boardgame will tell you that you can set the level up system in a few different ways to make the game more easily or challenging and I have found this to be very true as the number of chances to improve your level will change only subtly and the starting values will be able to have a big impact on the entire game. Adventure Phase

Then the player with the highest Initiative (i.e., the player with the green scoring marker on his Character board in highest position) reveals the first Adventure card and places it on the table in front of himself.

End of the Game

The players may agree that the game is lost for everyone if Smaug reaches Laketown. This is motivation for the players to cooperate. But if the game ends successfully, it is still the player with the most treasure who wins.

An Unexpected Party is a fast, fun, action-based tabletop game for 2-4 players, set in the opening scenes of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey– when the thirteen Dwarves arrive unannounced at Bag End, much to Bilbo’s dismay! Mischief ensues as the dwarves cheerfully jest with Bilbo under the watchful eye of Gandalf. After the activity on the Event card has been completed, the Event card is returned to the box, unless it is an Ability card in which case it remains displayed in front of the successful bidder. Then, reveal the next Event card. If the revealed Event card is a Gift card, simply follow the instructions on the card. Gift cards immediately grant benefits such as provisions, or increases to Initiative, Cunning, or Strength. If all players have either passed or failed the challenge, the Adventure card is returned to the box and the player with the highest Initiative reveals the next Adventure card. After each player has secretly chosen his Dwarf card, the players all reveal their chosen card simultaneously.The gameplay has been co-designed by Ian Luxmoore and Jarratt Gray, the co-creator of board game Endeavor: Age of Sail, while Weta senior concept artist Daniel Falconer - who worked on the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies - handled illustration. Unfold the board and place it on the table. Place the Bilbo figure on the "Bag End" space and the Smaug figure on the "Kill Smaug theDragon" space. Every time the group playing The Hobbit Boardgame reaches one of the big circles (except for Laketown) players will enter the second phase, the adventure phase, where players have a chance to fight for the gold one by one by using their three stats, any special cards they have collected and the dice in the box. Players are encouraged to give the adventures a go if they can as they are the key to winning the game but be warned if you can’t win the adventure card in front of you then Smaug gets to move closer to Laketown. Step into the Dwarves shoes and earn points by performing lines of the song, “The Things Bilbo Hates.” As you move around Bag End you will gather items and generally make a mess of the place! But be careful not to push Bilbo too far…If the player fails to achieve any of the requirements on the Adventure card, he loses the challenge and must draw a random Dragon tile and suffer the consequences. The symbols on the Dragons tiles may include: This delightfully small and simple game will take you and your friends through an adventure with multiple levels of difficulty, the ability to level up yourself and the fight to claim as much treasure as you can. Each of the 13 dwarves has unique abilities, making the board game an asymmetrical experience. An Unexpected Party is described by Weta as being a family board game that plays in 40 to 60 minutes. As I draw cards to see if Biblo will progress or we shall gain special rewards I am constantly on the edge, hoping for rewards and if not rewards trying to stay ahead on how I will land exactly where I need to give myself the best chance in the adventure phase.
