Math is not really my favorite or my best subject, but my niece loves math, so I thought she would enjoy that aspect of the story as well. I think that she actually found it somewhat interruptive, though, and wasn't interested in being pulled out of the story to solve a math problem. In the end I just read the story and let her appreciate it as a story. I did like the author's attempt to show kids real-world applications for math, since a common refrain is "when am I ever going to use this?!" In one minute, you can blink your eyes twenty times, hug your dog, plant seeds, say good-bye, watch the rain, or even save a life. So much can occur in this sliver of time—one minute can feel like a singular experience. This poignant picture book is at once an introduction to time for young readers, an ode to living each moment with purpose, and a thoughtful exploration of how children experience one minute (may it seem short or long) playfully, profoundly, and with a boundless sense of possibility. It’s important near the end that 365 is odd. There are 182 pairs of penguins plus one penguin, Chilly, who has blue feet instead of orange ones. Once there was a triangle that was -- as most triangles are -- always busy." The book points out some of the many frequent places where triangles can be found such as "holding up roofs, supporting bridges, making music, catching the wind for sailboats, being slices of pie . . . and more." Penguins is a 2006 children's book by Jean-Luc Fromental and illustrated by Joelle Jolivet which tells the story of a family who receives a penguin each day for a year. It was a Boston Globe-Horn Book Honor Award winner. The book talks about how much fish each penguin eats per day, and so how much fish all the penguins each together per day when they have 100 penguins. This is then converted to dollars per day (“A pound costs 3 dollars… 750 dollars! Per day!”) The hairstyle is the same, the glasses are the same, and what is even more creepy, the clothing is the same. I felt like they have been observing me behind trees, trashcans, questionable movie theaters to capture my essense.
