A scrim is a woven material, either finely woven lightweight fabric widely used in theatre, or a heavy, coarse woven material used for reinforcement in both building and canvasmaking. heres my theory on it, if you look at the standard issue tommy helmet in ww2, most of the troops had the standard tin helmet, possibly during that time the lessons learnt in camoflage were applied to the bowel type shape, ie hessian, netting applied etc. fast forward some time to arnhem and a completely different helmet shape. look at most of the piccies from that time and, due to the para lid being a completely different shape, scrim and hessian was applied to all lids. this is why i think that the airborne lads have carried on this tradition more so than the rest of the british army.
