One of the strengths of this novel is its clever use of dual timelines. The story shifts between the events leading up to the mass shooting and the present day, creating a sense of suspense and intrigue. However, some readers might find that the transitions between timelines occasionally break the momentum of the story, especially when they are deeply engrossed in one timeline and are suddenly pulled into another. The character of Cal Farrell is well-drawn, and readers will empathize with his struggle to come to terms with his hero status and his memory loss. Schweigart creates a cast of characters with authentic and relatable relationships, making readers root for the underdog and become invested in the story’s outcome. I will confess that the open ended finish slightly irked me! But, knowing that this is a series made it more palatable! Twenty years ago, Antoine Fuqua directed the well-regarded Denzel Washington/Ethan Hawke thriller Training Day. My Review: The Guilty One by Bill Schweigart was an intense ride. This book had me entirely enthralled!

Really? Who thought that was a good storyline? Yes, it was in the synopsis. I opened my mind to a possible think tank in the mix.

Cal is convinced its a serial killer and now he only has to convince everyone esle. My thoughts were turning and churning just trying to figure out what the hell was going on. I love that! I'm happy as can be when I am unable to figure stuff out! It's just something that happens so seldom. First of all, thank you NetGalley and Crooked Lane Books for providing an arc of the book. But then Joe receives a call that catches his interest. At first, it’s not clear why the woman on the other end of the line—Emily, voiced by Riley Keough, though we never see her face—is calling. She calls the operator “Sweetie,” as if she was talking to her child. Joe very nearly hangs up on her, thinking perhaps the woman dialed a wrong number, or is drunk. But when Emily mentions that she’s out for a drive, Joe asks Emily if she’s been abducted. She says yes. The tales of two troubled boys at individual crossroads are interwoven in Ballantyne’s first novel. Cal Farrell is a character you can’t help but root for, and Godfrey really helps bring him to life.
