Peyton Place es una novela coral que nos acerca a una población ficticia pero que tiene mucho de Potter Place, donde la autora vivió algunos años. Several characters and events were drawn from events in nearby towns and people that Metalious actually knew. Selena Cross was based on Barbara Roberts, a 20-year-old girl from the village of Gilmanton Ironworks, who murdered her father Sylvester after years of sexual abuse and buried his body under a sheep pen. In the novel, Selena kills her stepfather because incest was considered too taboo for readers at the time. Metalious' editor Kitty Messner made the change, much to the author's dismay and disapproval. Al tiempo que vemos crecer (y envejecer) a los personajes, los vemos enamorarse, casarse, mentir, asesinar, cumplir sueños, fracasar, morir… I don't mean to cause any offense to people who grew up in the fifties, but in a way I'm glad that I didn't come of age then. It seems hard to understand the criticisms that were thrown at this book in that time. I agree with the author when she said "to talk about adults without talking about their sex drives is like talking about a window without glass." Grace and her novels, including The Tight White Collar and No Adam In Eden, are part of women’s study programs in some pretty lofty universities.
