From a 25km-long, storm-buffeted island off the west coast of Scotland comes Laphroaig (pronounced ‘la-froyg’), a Gaelic word meaning ‘beautiful hollow by the broad bay’. The No 1 Islay malt in the UK and globally, Laphroaig is one of the most richly peated whiskies and the only single malt Scotch whisky to be awarded the Royal Warrant by HRH Prince of Wales. I believe this to be aged in Bourbon (although Laphroaig do make sherried 10 year old releases) - it has lovely warm, sweet, vanilla and caramel undertones. A single cask, well aged and independently bottled Laphroaig is the kind of release that we tend to get excited about!

It also has a distilling process which has been developed and refined over the course of 200 years by a succession of passionate master distillers. Its distinctive flavour profile is crafted from malted barley, initially cold-smoked over peat fires, a technique mastered by only a select few distilleries. Established in 1815, the distillery holds a long-standing reputation for producing distinctive and robust single malt Scotch whisky. Laphroaig 10 gets its distinctive taste from the natural features of Islay, the remote and rugged island off the West Coast of Scotland where the whisky is made.Laphroaig Distillery, nestled on the rugged shores of Islay, an island in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland, is celebrated as a haven for peat lovers and a custodian of the island's iconic smoky character. On the nose there are clouds of smoke with an iodine infused sea spray topped with a sprig of seaweed.

I've only been through about 4 dozen single malts over 20 years but this is my favourite overall (so far). One of whom was Ian Hunter, who laid down the process for Laphroaig 10 more than 75 years ago: and these methods are still followed today. This bottle of Laphroaig 10 Year Old 1990s (Damaged Tube) is an official bottling which was produced in the Islay region of Scotland. Aromas of new shoe leather, iodine, smoked trout, flowers, intense grain, soft cheese, peat-reek and dried seaweed.
