They gave her time to get herself tidied up, and when they brought her into the studio, the first thing she said was, "Oh dear, I have no idea what I'm doing here, I stepped out of the car, and there I was lying prostitute on the pavement." The audience roared. Her family were all there, and had been taken to the studios earlier in the day, but sadly her mother and her brother Harold had died by this time. Auntie Agnes was there, though, a real favourite of Hylda's, and one of the high spots of the show was that Hylda and her brother and sisters did the 'six Lancashire steps' with the clog dance. She spent three years researching it and, after performing the play at regional theatres (1993-97), had an eight-week run in the West End, at the Adelphi theatre (1997). The production was nominated for a Laurence Olivier theatre award. Hylda Baker ( 1905 - 1986), was an entertainer from the north of England who started her career as a Music Hall entertainer . When the Music Hall became unpopular she succeeded in transferring her stage persona to TV series called 'Nearest and Dearest (1968 to 1972) and "Not On Your Nellie", and to films such as 'Up the Junction'. She is known for catchphrases such as "Be soon, I said, be soon", "You big girl's blouse" and "She Knows, you know", which is the title of this play.

Baker came to national attention in BBC television's The Good Old Days in 1955. This led to her television series, Be Soon (named after another of her catchphrases), in 1957 and a supporting part in the sitcom Our House in 1960, followed by her own sitcom, The Best of Friends, in 1963. All the old familiar jokes and situations are affectionately preserved, with a pop singer and coffee bar thrown in to prove that the film’s makers are bang up to date with the mood of the fifties." [3] Last of the Summer Wine brought her regular appearances in pantomimes to add to a full CV of regional theatre parts. In the West End, she played Ms Cowper in Cash on Delivery (Whitehall theatre, 1996), a farce by Michael Cooney, son of Ray Cooney, godfather of the genre, who directed the production. One glowing review described her character as “a grotesquely abused old trout”. The play has you laughing one minute and almost crying the next. However, the problem with the play is that it is a little too long. It lasts 2 hours 20 minutes, but I think 2 hours would have been suffice. There are some parts of the act that needed shortening . This was because they became a little repetitive, particularly as Hylda Baker has a voice that was irritating at times.

A Comedy Heritage plaque in her honor was unveiled at Brinsworth House in 1997 by the actress Jean Ferguson, aThe parents decide to find someone else to marry the girl. And that's the plot so far. Not sure if you would want to watch this dog to find out what happens. I guess I will finish (14 minutes left) but I don't think I will like it! I adore Hylda Baker, I just love her unique brand of humour, and of course she's great, it must have been hard to find roles for someone so unique, she would definitely find her place with Nearest and Dearest and Not on your Nellie. Her mishaps with words are present, but used sparingly. She played the abortionist Aunt Ada in the ground-breaking 1960 film Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, starring Salford actor Albert Finney.

After someone remarked to her that she shared some of Hylda Baker’s mannerisms, Fergusson recalled doing impressions of the Lancashire comedy actor and queen of innuendo-ridden malapropisms in the playground at school. This inspired her to write her own one-woman show, She Knows You Know!, a poignant and often tragic story about a performer disliked by many with whom she worked, the title taken from one of Baker’s catchphrases.Hylda Baker appeared in pantomime with Jimmy Clitheroe whose popular BBC radio show ran from 1956 to 1972. What was the show called? My favourite part in this movie comes towards the end. It reminds me so much of the color - 'The Colour Purple'. It's the scene where - or it's the way Marilyn walks in the room brandishing a wedding ring and making the announcement 'I's Married Now' - "I Married Terry 3 Months Ago" - (in a snotty nose voice) - as if that makes everything alright and all the problems go away.

Breedon Books ISBN 185983101X While studying for A-levels at Bridgend girls’ grammar school, she joined an amateur dramatics company, the Bridgend Castle Players, then trained as an actor at Cardiff Castle College of Music and Drama (now the Royal Welsh College of Music & Drama), graduating in 1965.For the Bournemouth run of the Roy Clarke creation, Robert Fyfe and Juliette Kaplan replaced the original actors playing Howard and Pearl (then named Ivy). Fergusson, Fyfe and Kaplan were introduced to the TV version in 1985 and soon became regulars, staying until the final episode 25 years later.
