Like other RME products before the Fireface 802 combines excellent analog circuit design with latest digital conversion technology. All balanced TRS & XLR I/Os as well as the two phones outputs offer outstanding low noise and distortion values. In best RME tradition and product philosophy converters and preamps don’t produce “sound”, they do not add or remove anything from the source signal, just capture it as it is. As mentioned above, ADAT I/O is included for expanding the UCX II with other studio hardware such as microphone preamps and AD/DA converters, with MIDI I/O for control of instruments (like synths and drum machines), as well as for sending remote control messages to other hardware. This allows for remote control of the Fireface from multiple devices. This is similarly beneficial when you are monitoring in an external control room to the studio space. Alongside Control Room functionality, TotalMix features a range of effects to improve monitoring. A 5-band parametric EQ and Dynamics are available on every channel, whilst Reverb and Delay sends allow for enhanced monitor mixes during recording.Like all RME audio interfaces, the Fireface UCX II features TotalMix FX, the powerful on-board DSP mixer and software. TotalMix gives you the ability to route any hardware or software input to any physical output, creating near limitless possibilities in terms of mixing. Because TotalMix is DSP-based, all the processing takes place within the UCX II. This means the interface offers latency-free monitoring as well as the ability to create complex routings without any performance issues.

Note: there is also a TotalMix for iPad app, which is what you’ll want if you want to use an iPad itself for recording and mixing. TotalMix Remote is simply for network control (of an RME device connected to another computer on the network). Whilst these frequencies are generally considered undesirable for audio - eating into headroom and potentially causing damage to other equipment - one instance where DC-coupling remains desirable is the world of modular synthesizers, where static or slow-moving signals are used for control over various parameters such as pitch note values or LFOs. Every input and output is individually switchable to these common professional studio levels: -10 dBV, +4 dBu, HiGain (equivalent to +2 dBV, +13 dBu and +19 dBu for digital full scale). By integrating open source MIDI control protocols you can remote control the Fireface 802 with any MIDI device or your iPad to use it e.g. live as a mixer or as a control center of your home theater or hifi system. The key point is that all this is done without any additional latency due to the calculation by specialized chips directly in the device.
